[Hairstyle] Tousled Bantu Knot Side Bun | Wash Day

For the first time in my adult life, I did not have straight hair for my birthday and it's been 10 months since my last relaxer! This moment is totally surreal. Not only did I not really feel like straightening, I really didn't have the time to do it either. Is it just me or is everyone swamped with stuff to do lately? Nonetheless, I wanted my hair to look cute and sassy for a few days without having to devote too much time (or manipulation) in daily styling. My bantu knots a few weeks ago were really beautiful, so I used the same products and techniques with this week's wash day:

  1. Detangled- with my fingers and
  2. Pre-Shamoo- using extra virgin coconut oil to detangle.
  3. Shampoo- with Jessicurl Cleansing Cream.
  4. Extreme deep condition- I deep conditioned with Jessicurl Deep Treatment on the length of my hair. Then I massaged my stands with extra virgin coconut oil, covered with a plastic cap and sat under my hooded dryer for an hour and left it in overnight.
  5. Green Aloe Hair Rinse- After rinsing the conditioner, I applied 1 part steeped green tea + 1 part aloe vera gel + 1 tbsp Glycerin, using a narrow tip applicator to my strands--focusing on the roots. I let it sit for a few minutes then rinsed.
  6. Smoothing Treatment- with a large dollop of Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution.
  7. Air Dried- to 80-85% wrapped in a cotton t-shirt.
  8. Leave ins- I used the LOC method, starting with a little extra virgin coconut oil, Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner, my kitchenista Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter, and bantu knotted my hair in about 10 sections.

The Results:
My bantu knot curls were super tight after letting them set longer than usual. How I go from BSL/MBL to chin length in a matter of hours still trips me out at times. I wasn't really feeling the ridiculous shrinkage, so I pinned them up into a high bun with a centre part the first day, a high bun with side part the second day, and a tousled side bun the third day. (Check out this tutorial on how I make my bantu knots last here.) I'm not sure where my hair journey is going right now, but I'm enjoying the ride!

  1. Glad you had cute birthday hair. I need to check the tutorial out because I was definitely wondering how you kept the curls intact. One or two good sleeps and my hair is cranky and revolting against any tamed pattern.

    1. This go around, I didn't even use a holding product so I wasn't expecting them to last at all. But I'm excited that they did! Pineappling with a silk scarf does the trick!

    1. Believe it or not, I still get wonky BKO curls from time to time---especially if I don't completely wrap the ends around the knot. But that's when it all goes up into a bun!

    1. They're my favorite too! I'm really not sure that I would have made it this far in my stretch if I didn't have a great heat free way to stretch my roots!
