[Hairstyle] Flexi Rods | #WashDayExperience

I've only done the bare minimal to maintain my hair over the last 3 weeks. I moisturized and sealed just enough to pull my hair up and keep my top knot from becoming a top disaster. I didn't comb. I barely detangled. I totally don't recommend this! It's so weird---again---this wash day, when I took down my hair it was super moisturized, super fluffy, and relatively tangle free. I know that neglect can easily turn into breakage, but I can't lie, I'm totally enjoying the simplicity of it all in the midst of my super hectic cross state move, getting my little people ready for school, and trying to enjoy the last few days of summer. The only thing that's been consistent are my wash days. Here's how today's went:

  1. Pre-shampoo- I lightly detangled and slathered my hair in extra virgin coconut oil.
  2. Co-Wash- with Shea Moisture Co-wash Conditioning Cleanser.
  3. Extreme Deep Condition- I applied Matrix Ultra Hydrasource Conditioner to my hair root to tip, then I massaged my stands with extra virgin coconut oil, covered with a plastic cap and left it in overnight.
  4. Tea Rinse- using 2 chamomile tea bags steeped in 2 cups of water + 2 tbsp of coconut oil.
  5. Detangling Treatment- I applied a large dallop of Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution
  6. Air Dry-  wrapped in a satin scarf for about 30 minutes.
  7. Leave ins- I used Chi Silk Infusion to aid in detangling and smooth my strands then rolled my hair on flexi rods in about 1" sections.

The Results:
As I detangled, I snipped a few frayed ends as a part of the 30 Day Split Challenge. Then I re-wet my hair with water and pretty much followed Jeni's Essentials For Great Flexi Rod Sets guide to install my rods. The process was super tedious. I skipped moisturizing with my beloved Jessicurl Too Shea! for fear of weighing down my strands. I figured that if all else failed, I'd co-wash in a day or two. I ended up sleeping in the rods because I wanted to make sure that they were dry. OMGosh!! Worst. Idea. Ever. If I ever do that again shoot me. No seriously. SHOOT ME. It's going to take several cups of coffee to make up for the sleep lost and several yoga sessions to get the kinks out of my neck. Oh yeah, did I mention that was the WORST. IDEA. EVER?!?

It was challenging to keep my ends wrapped on the rods, so if I ever do this again, I'll definitely have to use end papers. I'll probably pick up some wider (think fatter) flexi-rods because although I loved these little sprial curls, if you know me---and I think that you do---I LOVE me some BIG BOUNCY curls.

With all that said, these curls are sooooo cute. Y'all should see me shaking my head all over the place. It's truly truly sad how silly I get when I'm having a good hair day and I think that no one is looking! #dontjudgeme!

Besitos!

  1. Your hair looks so cute. Sorry that it was so tedious. I may try this soon with perm rods. I just got end papers to try out. I guess they help protect the ends. What other benefits do they have?

    1. Thanks so much chica. How awful would it have been if the curls turned out a hot mess?!? LOL.

If I ever go for flexi-rods again, I'll definitely use end papers because I struggled to keep my straighter ends secured on the rods. Plus, I'm pretty sure that the end papers will keep my ends moisturized better too.

      Thanks for stopping by chica!

  3. Sleeping in flexi rods is definitely NO FUN! The only way I've been able to get some sleep is to the rods in the back or one side going straight down so that I'm able to rest my head. Your results were definitely worth it though because your curls are cute, cute, cute! Love 'em!

    1. I did that Jeni! And I still couldn't sleep! Next time---I will just have to suffer under the dryer!

The good news is that trick about two-strand twisting your roots is freakin GENIUS! #bowdown LOL.

    1. Believe it or not...I reallllllly like it! It doesn't strip my hair, the scent is great, and it actually does a decent job of conditioning. Afterwards my hair felt fluffy. BUT---I do think that it's over priced considering how much of it I have to use to cleanse my hair and I've never used it on "un" pre-shampooed hair---if that makes any sense at all. LOL.

  5. Such beautiful curls. I can't ever sleep in any type of rollers so always avoid it if possible! The results are so pretty though x

    1. Thanks Lesley! Trust and BELIEVE that I'll never make this mistake again. I'll just melt into a puddle under the hooded dryer for an hour. (That wasn't too dramatic was it? Ha-ha!)

    1. That tip about two-strand twisting each section before wrapping around the rod is friggin genius! It means that you get double the amount of curl for half the work. Not having to disturb the curls prevents frizz and probably makes them last longer!

  11. You look great! And a bad night of sleep was enough for me to give up on flexi rods after only one try. I just can't hang! I can sleep much better on curl formers!

    1. Curlformers are next on my list of things to try. But they are just so darn expensive. Considering that I love bantu knots, I already have a bunch of flexi-rods, I have a ton of satin rollers, and I just got a Caruso steam curler kit---I'm wondering---do I really NEED another heatless way to curl my hair? LOL.

Ahem...that was totally a rhetorical question---OF COURSE I *NEED* CURL FORMERS. LOL <3 always the hair obsessed chica!

  12. Your curls are banging! From MBL to NL, with flexi rods but they sure look cute.
Would have love to see how you rolled them. Maybe next time you could roll them up instead of a spiral motion which will provide a cushion for sleeping.

  15. Aaaah KLP!! You did such an awesome job with your flexi set! It's sooo cute!!

Let me tell you, I hate... HATE!!! Sleeping on a flexi-set. It has to be some form of torture. The few times I've ended up doing it, I am so angry with myself for allowing it to happen. I feel your pain girlie!
