Weekly Wishes

I love Weekly Wishes because it gives me an opportunity to reflect on the days that have passed and plan for the days already without getting stuck in the fact that Monday's aren't my favorite day by any means. Last week, I struggled to get my to-do list crossed off but I had a blast in the process. My kiddos hosted a Thankmas, (Think if Thanksgiving married Christmas and they had a bouncing baby boy) party for their friends. Call it a glorified themed play-date; I call it a chance to have an adult conversation with an excuse to polish off a half-dozen cookies. I also finished my Christmas shopping, finally cleaned/re-organized my product stash, and spent quality time with a good friend that I hadn't seen in months. Tiring yet satisfying. But that wasn't the best part of my week.

Anytime of the year is a good time to be kind and lend a helping hand; especially during the holiday season. My neighbor is usually Suzy Sunshine, but last week I noticed that she just wasn't her bright self. I stopped on my way home to say hello and check in on her. She told me that her hubby recently deployed, she has 3 very active boys, and she struggles with MS. Not to mention that she just moved into our community and totally feels alone. My heart ached for her. I didn't really know what to say. So, I held her hand and told her that if ever she needed a mommy-time-out that she could gladly bring her minions over. That's what we do for each other around here. The relief and gladness that I saw in her eyes was instantaneous. It was almost like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She broke down in tears and thanked me in between sobs. I don't even know her last name nor does it really doesn't matter. What I do know is that genuine acts of kindness change people. It changes perspective. It makes life's icky situations a little brighter. I really didn't have time to stop and chat. It was cold. I had a report to finish. But I'm ever glad that I did. It reminded me of the beautiful outpour of affection that y'all showed me a few weeks ago. You didn't have to stop and read. You didn't even have to comment. You didn't have to whisper a prayer of peace and hope for me. But you did. And I'm ever grateful for that. #TeamNice rocks!

This week my real life to do list is long so my weekly wish is short: find some fun in the chaos that we call prepping for Christmas. I wish not to lose a finger putting together my kid's new bikes or lose my mind when I realize that I forgot someone on my list. What's your wish this week? Big it big or small--speak it into existence! And if you want more Weekly Wishes, check out Melyssa @ The Nectar Collective.

[Review] Macadamia Natural Oil Rejuvenating Shampoo and Deep Repair Mask

Product Review: Macadamia Natural Oil Rejuvenating Shampoo and Deep Repair Mask

Price: $4.95 3oz (Shampoo)  $10.62 3.3oz (Mask)

Purchased at:  Amazon.com

Promises:
The Rejuvenating Shampoo is designed to add moisture and protection to all hair types and is excellent for dry, damaged hair.

  • Sulfate and paraben free
  • Gently cleanses chemically treated, damaged hair
  • Replenishes moisture with no heavy build-up
  • Builds protection from harsh daily environmental elements
The Deep Repair Masque is a hair reconstructor that will penetrate and rebuild damaged hair for improved shine and elasticity.

  • Enriched with Macadamia & Argan oils
  • Deep nourishment & long-lasting conditioning
  • Ultra-conditioning hair reconstruction
My Thoughts:
Rejuvenating Shampoo-
I try to force my hair to like shampoo. It fights back. Tangles take over. It wins. I loose. This shampoo is no exception. I can't call it gentle or moisturizing but I can say that its excellent at removing build-up and giving your that squeaky clean feeling. You'll get a great lather, although its sulfate free and the scent is yummy. In the future, I'd probably use this in a co-cleanser mix or in place of my regular clarifying shampoo.

Deep Repair Mask-
My commitment to fighting breakage and strengthening my ends (to increase my length retention) requires me to enlist a good protein packed conditioner to use just on my previously relaxed ends frequently (I use a uber moisturizing treatment on my roots). I didn't want to like this conditioner. Why? Just take a good look at the price of the 8.5oz tub of this stuff. Boom. That's why. But, my hair likes it. It might even love it in a few weeks. Although its pricey, a little goes a long way. It's ultra rich and super thick. I've used this sample size here, here, here and I still have enough for 1 or 2 more deep conditioning sessions. I like the way that my ends absorb it and how after rinsing my hair feels so smooth, so light. This isn't a conditioner that you use to aid in detangling. You definitely need to make sure that you detangle before applying. Nor is this a conditioner that you use for moisture. If you feel that your hair isn't the biggest protein fan, you'll want to follow this treatment up with a moisturizing deep condition. The scent is awesome and for some reason, I feel like my ends are retaining moisture better with the addition of this gem to my regimen. In a few weeks, when I straighten, I'll be able to see if it's helped keep my ends in tact.

Have you ever tried an of the Macadamia Natural Oil products?

Hot Holiday Hair (Week 2)

One&20 and SavingOurStrands Presents: Hot Holiday Hair (Week 2)

Ready to bring the SavingOurStrands Braids & Buns Pinterest board to life? Here's week 2's challenge: Tumbir's popular-hairstyles Double Braid Bun. Britt over at One&20 is covering how to's, tips, and tricks for the curly natural chicas and yours truly (ME!) is representing for the relaxed&radiant tresses. I know that you have super chic looks too! Share your own hot holiday hair posts in our weekly link up below. We've even got this nifty badge for you to use and don't forget to visit with the other hairlistas in the link up.

Double Braid Bun

  1. Moisturize, seal and detangle hair. (I started on previously bantu knotted air dried hair.)
  2. Create a side part and section hair from ear to ear.(Optional: Leave a small section out to fame your face.)
  3. Pull back half into a low bun.
  4. Loosely dutch braid each front section. Pick apart and fluff your braid creating an illusion of plumped fullness.
  5. Pull the ends back and wrap around the bun. Secure with pins.

Tips & Tricks

  1. Skimpy bun? Use a mesh donut like I do here.
  2. No Definition? Don't bother. I love a good messy updo. Roll with elegant yet casual look.
  3. Braid trouble? It doesn't matter if you dutchbraid, fishtail, or two strand twist. Whatever braid/twist is easiest for you to do---go for it!
  4. Lackluster?  Try applying an oil or butter before styling. I use my kitchenista Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter.
    popular-hairstyles.tumblr.com
  5. Flyaways? Tame flyways by covering with a silk scarf for a few minutes before heading out. I totally wish that I would have done that first!

Wash Day {KLP}

This week I did another hybrid protein/moisture deep condition. I'm totally looking forward to straighting in a few weeks to see if this protein layering technique is as awesome as I think it is.
Products

  1. Detangled- with my fingers and a bit of my Tangerine Scented Aloe Vera Juice.
  2. Cleansing Cream (Shampoo)- I applied a generous amount of my DIY Co-cleansing cream to my tresses concentrating on the roots. I let it sit for 3-4 minutes then rinsed.
  3. Extreme Deep Condition- with Jessicurl Deep Treatment on my roots, Macadamia Oil Deep Repair Masque on my ends, then massaged extra virgin coconut oil into my strands from root to tip. I covered with a plastic cap, relaxed under my heat cap for about 2 hours, then left it in overnight.
  4. Smoothing Treatment- with a large dollop of Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution.
  5. Air Dried- to 80-85% wrapped in a cotton t-shirt.
  6. Leave-Ins- Herbal Essences Touchably Smooth Split End Protector and my kitchenista Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter.
Results:
Shed Hair
Wet Texlaxed Hair
Less than a pea sized total amount of loss hair. I really can't believe it. All of my long term stretches have been plagued with breakage, tangles, and general hair disrespect. But not this one. My roots are soft, my ends are strong, and I'm living on to stretch another week. *throws confetti* I don't know what the confetti is for, but I feel like a G right now. To style, of course I bantu knotted my hair (without holding product) and whipped it up into a cute updo for my company Holiday party.

Anyone else deep in a stretch? How are you surviving?

[Review] CC's Naturals Happy Hair Tea {Keyda}

CC's Natural Happy Hair Tea

Price: $6.00

Ingredients: Hibiscus, Lavender, Green Tea & Nettle Leaf

  • Hibiscus Flower Prevents hair loss, Enhances growth of hair, Discourages split ends, Thickens hair, and Prevents premature graying of hair
  • Nettle Leaf counteract hair loss, prevent and cure dandruff, reduce oily secretions and improve the quality of dry, lifeless hair and stimulate the scalp
  • Lavender helps stimulate growth and balance oil production
  • Green Tea Stimulates Hair growth, soothes Dandruff and psoriasis, As well as strengthens and conditions
Directions: Add 3 tablespoons or 1 large tea bag to a large Pyrex glass cup or bowl and fill with boiling water and cover. Steep for about 30 minutes. When the tea is warm, apply to scalp and hair and massage thoroughly. When pouring tea onto hair and scalp, hold a bowl at the end of hair strands to catch the tea and reapply. Repeat several times. Leave In or rinse out if desired. If you use a conditioner, use this tea rinse after you condition your hair. And then move on to your final styling regimen...

My Thoughts: CC's Naturals is becoming one of my fave/"go-to" spots for the different teas I use for my hair. This is my second tea mixture from them and I LOVE IT! The price is reasonable for a good product. So, I always do my tea rinse after my conditioner. Honestly, this specific tea does not require a smoothing treatment, I do it out of habit. However, my hair feels soft yet strong with this rinse. The smell is not super strong, so it does not overwhelm you. I was concerned about it being "red" because I know other teas (i.e. black tea) can color your hair naturally over time. However, I have noticed nothing odd with my hair, at least nothing I would not like :P . My hair does have a nice auburn brown color too it, which honestly, I don't quite remember having until after I began using this tea. But it could be the sun from summer and a bunch of other things. Lol.

All in all... I really like this tea rinse and have noticed consistent hair growth and my scalp is sooooooo much healthier (i.e. little to no dandruff).

Have you tried a BOMB.COM tea rinse!?

How To Make Your Own Co-Cleanser

I try to love shampoo. I really do. I've only found one shampoo that I think is decent (Matrix Biolage Hydratherapie Hydrating Shampoo) but that still leaves 4-5 full bottles of shampoo that won't get used any time soon. Recently, I used the Curlicious Curls Cleansing Cream, this cute little co-cleanser that claims to hydrate whilst still cleaning your tresses. Although, I didn't know what to make of the product, I do know one thing- I liked the way that my hair felt afterwards. No tangles. No stripped feeling. Slightly moisturized. I mean, seriously what's not to like about that? So, I'm on the co-cleanser bandwagon, but refuse to buy another shampoo. What should I do? Go kitchenista:

How to Make Your Own Co-Cleanser:

  1. One part Shampoo: a good co-cleanser still needs a little something something to clean your tresses. I keep that something something to a minimum. Use as much as you want.
  2. Two parts Oil: Nothing revives my hair from a tangled bird's nest like coconut oil. Be proactive instead of reactive by adding a bit to your mix.
  3. Three parts Conditioner: In order for this mix to work, you've gotta have more conditioner than shampoo. Choose one that's cheap, but effective and does a decent job of lightly moisturizing your tresses.

Troubleshooting:

  1. Don't expect suds- This mix won't lather well or give you that sudsy feeling like regular shampoo. It will however gently clean without tripping your tresses.
  2. It's thick- Yes, it's going to be thick. Yes, you'll want to store it in a jar or a narrow tip applicator bottle. Yes, youll definitely use more than a dime sized amount to wash all that thick hair on your head. Yes, you still need to deep condition afterwards.
  3. Make a little at a time- Do not go and make a gallon tub of co-cleanser if you're not going to use it straight away. Ha-ha! I guess-estim
ate that a batch will last about 2 weeks before you might want to trash it. Keep it in the fridge just in case.
Rats! Your first Kitchenista co-cleanser was a fail. Well, don't fret. Try again with more of whatever it was lacking. Reach for more conditioner if your tresses weren't quite moisturized enough. Maybe add a little Aloe Vera Juice if it's too thick. Cut out the oil if you felt like your hair was greasy or coated.

Have you ever used a co-cleanser? What characteristics are you looking for it in?

Leave-ins
Hola Chicas!

So, I have decided to go ahead with getting a touch up either the end of this week or early next week before my Hawaii trip! I knowww .... I had all of the hopes/dreams hehe to last till the first two weeks of Jan... but I want to be FLOWING in Hawaii and I do not want much hassle with my hair! So, I shall share the pics of my length check soon! :)

(1) Detangled my hair with my magic star jumbo rake seamless comb.

(2) Extreme Deep Conditioner: Coffee Oil/Philip Kingsley Toner/ JBCO/ My essential oil on my scalp. AS I AM Hydration Elation on length of my hair with focus on my roots. Chi Deep Brilliance Reconstruct Deep Protein Reconstructor on ends of my hair. Extra Virgin Coconut Oil all over my hair to seal it all in.

(3) Heated my hair for about 1 1/2 hour with the Gold N Hot Conidtioning Cap.
(4) Rinsed with ApHogee Balancing Moisturizerr but no tea rinse today.

(5) Leave-ins: After about 80% air dried, sprayed with Nexxus Hydralight Weightless Root Lift Spray and (new!) Fructis Intensly Smooth Conditioning Cream. (Luvss the smell)

Back of Hair

Side View
Results: My hair was sooooooooooo soft! :) I always aim for softness with my hair because it has the tendency to be DRY if not mindful. However, my scalp also felt very clean and moisturized as well. I will be reviewing the coffee oil this week! I decided to braid my hair while it was about 95% dry into "Crown Braid". It is still holding up :) I will unbraid it probably mid week. I am thinking about touching up at home rather than salon but we shall see!

How was your wash day!? Think I'm getting a touch-up too soon!?

Weekly Wishes

Mean people suck; Cruel for no reason; Nasty without provocation. BUT, not the lovely readers of this blog. Or perhaps its our ridiculously sunny no-rude-people-allowed demeanor scaring them away. *shrugs* Nonetheless the care and concern that you guys showed me last week made my heart happy. The prayers that you whispered lifted my spirit. And for that, I'm ever thankful. Last week, I got a look at the big picture and here's how I changed my perspective:
  1. Ask for forgiveness: When I let fear and doubt take over, I'm making a clear concise choice not to trust in God. When poopy times roll in, it's time to trust God and just hold on. It's not going to feel good. I won't understand. I'll probably never get it. But my God does.
  2. Pretty Girl Night: All of my friends know that my favorite part of going out is getting ready. There were many a time that I would get fancy with my hair---then go watch trash tv. There is just something relaxing about it all. Some people go to therapy, I chalk my hair pink. To each her own.
  3. Get Grateful: As I watched my minions decorate our Christmas tree, there was no room for sadness or sorrow on my heart. All that I have and especially what I don't have is indeed a blessing.
  4. Be Silly: I married my superhero hubby because he is sillier than I am. Plus, he's super cute and still had an original super Nintendo. How could I say no? #dontjudgeme! Saturday, he scored matching "Classically Trained" official tees for us. If you're nerds like us (or know someone who is), you can get yours from Amazon here. I gave him his Call Of Duty video game; he totally deserved it. But, I probably won't see him until Groundhogs day. The sounds of warfare coming from his man cave will be my only hint that he's still alive until he beats the game.
  5. Eat Chocolate: Homemade From Scratch. Chocolatey. Brownies. ¿Necesito decir más? Claro que si, I didn't think so.
I'm starting to think that my poopy weekend was reverse #TeamNice in action. I guess that it proves the old adage: "You reap what you sow." And I'm grateful that I sowed kindness! Because I've got a pep back in my step, I'm wishing to keep up the laser focus that prevented me from working over the weekend so that I could enjoy my family and I've totally got to get my Christmas cards/assorted gifts in the mail this week.

What's your wish this week? Big it big or small--speak it into existence! And if you want more Weekly Wishes, check out Melyssa @ The Nectar Collective.

Sunday Healthy Hairology Medley

Last week was full of great healthy hair related blogs, vlogs, and forum features. Here's a few that I've bookmarked from about the web:

Let's Talk About Relaxer Application Time fancyflairlady: For a self-texlaxed girl, figuring out the right application time to get your desired texture can be tricky. Too long and you've got bone straight. Too short and you've got extremely underprocessed tresses. Take a peek at how Kim figured out her application time sweet spot.

Super Foods For Your Hair hairsprayandhighheels: Healthy hair starts on the inside. If you've you've mastered pre-pooing, deep conditioning, and protective styling, but still not getting anywhere. Maybe it's time to eat for your hair. Check out Ange's list of hair super foods.

5 Signs Your Hair Is DONE With A Stretch naijahaircangrow: I'm 23 weeks into my stretch and compared to my other stretches, this one has been a breeze. But if I encountered any of these signs from Dabs or if I just lost the will to stretch any longer---it would be relaxer time!

How To Do Crochet Braids With Marley Hair kisforkinky: Are you in love with the marley hair trend but not a braid kinda girl? Consider trying Jouelzy's super simple protective style.

Ready to bring the SavingOurStrands Braids & Buns Pinterest board to life? Here's week 1's challenge: bellashoot's Messy 4-Braid Updo. The Messy 4-Braid Updo

  4. Repeat until complete. Secure the section with a hair tie if necessary.
  5. Take one of the braids in the back and cross it over the back of your head. Secure with a bobby pin.

  5. Need fullness? Be sure to pick apart and fluff each braid to give that illusion of plumped intricate fullness.
It took me 4-5 (hundred) attempts to get this one exactly the way that I wanted, but I'm so glad that I didn't give up! What updo did you try this week? Link it up for us to see below!

Hot Holiday Hair: Braided Bun With A Bow

Holiday Hot Hair: Braided Bun With A Bow
This style was revisited from my previous Only Mins to Win it style!

Directions:

  1. Bend upside down. Gather hair at middle back of head and begin braid. You want to make sure it is tight.
  2. After braid was done up to top, I gathered hair and placed elastic band over it.
  3. To get my bun effect, I spread out my ponytail towards my face. Then I did a "pin curl" with my ends basically around to make my bun.
  4. Vaaalaaaaa ...spice up your bangs! Place bow at back and you have a gift of lovely hair! hehe (You can place the bow in front as well! - Check both my versions)

How To Use Hair Chalk On Relaxed Hair

How To Use Hair Chalk On Relaxed Hair

Permanent color and relaxers typically don't mix but if you're looking for a quick, easy, non-damaging way to add a little temporary pizzazz to your tresses---you've gotta try hair chalk. Here are some quick tips to using it on textured or relaxed hair:

Hair Chalk Do's:

  1. Always detangle, moisturize and seal first.
  2. Be gentle as you rub the chalk on your hair. Creamy or powdered chalks work best.
  3. Seal with a medium hold hairspray. I love a tad of Chi Enviro Flex Hold Hair Spray.

Hair Chalk Don'ts:

  1. Never apply to your roots; it will run if you sweat. Trust me on this one.
  2. Don't test drive this look while wearing an irreplaceable shirt---the chalk can be messy the first go around.
  3. Don't skip your deep conditioning treatment with your next wash.
I really thought that I would look ratchet with my bright pink pastel ombre tips---but I kinda like it! And here's how I got that cute Romantic Low Chignon.

What color should I try next?

Mini Wash {KLP}

I promised myself that I wouldn't stretch past 16 weeks this year yet here I am at 22 weeks post and in love. Deep conditioning over night is really where it's at. I haven't had to cowash my hair in about 3 weeks. My roots are soft and with the addition of protein layering, I think that my ends are in decent shape.
Wash day products
  1. Detangled- with my fingers and a bit of extra virgin coconut oil.
  2. Extreme Deep Conditon- with Halka Baba de Caracol on my roots, Macadamia Oil Deep Repair Masque on my ends, then massaged extra virgin coconut oil into my strands from root to tip. I covered with a plastic cap, relaxed under my heat cap for about 2 hours, then left it in overnight.
  3. Smoothing Treatment- with a large dollop of Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution.
  4. Leave-Ins- I air dried to 80-85% wrapped in a cotton t-shirt. Then applied Herbal Essences Touchably Smooth Split End Protector and my kitchenista Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter.
  5. Low Blow Dry- I pulled my roots gently but taut and blow dried on low to speed up the drying process.
Results:
Easy, breezy detangling? Check. Smooth strands? Check. Moisturized roots and strong ends? Check. I didn't want to blow dry my hair, but I needed to get out of the house and to my errands. It was miserably cold and I don't want pneumonia! I forgot to tea rinse but I'm so happy that I remembered my smoothing/detangling treatment using Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution. After I dried, I bantu knotted my hair for about 30 minutes, through it up in a messy 4 braid updo and went about my business.

How do you speed up your wash day?

Wash Day - 6 weeks post {Keyda}

Happy Holidays Chicas!!

Some tidbits: I washed my hair right before Thanksgiving and the following hair style was my "go-to" for the Holiday Weekend!

(1) Detangled my hair with my Magic Rake comb
(2) Prepoo with my OddStrandOut Coffee Oil mix on my scalp and the Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Instant Recovery Mask on the length of my hair. I also placed CHI Deep Brilliance Reconstruct on the ends of my hair.
(3) Cowash with Moroccan Argan Creme Conditioner. I absolutely loved the smell of this product and my hair felt yummy!
(4) Tea rinse with CC's Naturals Happy Hair Tea. Yummy! :)
(5) Smoothing Treatment- I added Aphogee Balancing Moisturizer over the tea in my hair and a cap. Then Faux steamed in the shower.
(6) Leave-ins: I air dried 80%. I applied Aphogee Keratin & Green Tea Restructurizer on length of hair, Nexxus Hydralight lift on my roots and Organix Coconut Anti-Breakage Serum on my ends. I lightly blow dried before styling my hair!

Results: My hair is continuing to feel strong but soft. However, as we are engulfed in winter, I have noticed more shedding :/ ... soo I am beginning to start the process of minimizing my shedding. The last thing I want is a increase of my hair falling out!! Ahhhh no bueno

Hair Style: I did a pretty nice (If I say sooo myself) Braid updo with bow for the holidays! Tutorial coming soon!
