[Hairstyle] Wash Day | Curls & Hair Chalk

Maintaining my hair last week was soooooo easy. Omgosh...soooo easy. I actually remembered to moisturize and seal plus I was able to bring back one of my favorite hair styles: The Headband Tuck. (Check out the tutorial here)

Did you peep that shine? It's from Modere Antioxidant Hair Serum. I applied it throughout my hair then re-set on my Caruso steam rollers. I was pleasantly surprised at how light it was and how well it smoothed my frizzes. Believe it or not...3 hours before I took this picture, I ran a 5K race. How awesome is that?

But I won't front---most of the week, I was in a high bun. Shoot me now. I just can't quit my addiction to the top knot. Ha-ha! Here's how my #washdayexperience went:
    1. Extreme Deep Condition- I detangled my hair in about 8 sections then applied Matrix Hydrasource Conditioner to my roots and Joico K-Pak Revitaluxe from the line of demarcation to my ends. Afterwards, I applied a little extra virgin coconut oil from root to tip to seal in the conditioner. I covered with a plastic cap + knit beanie for a few hours.
    2. Tea Rinse- I hopped in the shower to rinse the conditioner section by section. Then I applied my tea rinse of 2 green tea bags + 1 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of glycerin. I let the mixture sit on my hair for about 5 minutes.
    3. Detangling Treatment- I rinsed the tea then applied a Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution.
    4. Air Dried- I applied a bit of Modere Antioxidant Hair Serum to 80-85% wrapped in a cotton t-shirt.
    5. Leave ins-I used Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner to moisturize and extra virgin coconut oil to seal, then set my hair on orange perm rods and left in overnight (approx 4-5 hours)

    The Results

    Overnight Deep Conditioning-
I'm totally used to deep conditioning over night. I didn't for this wash day---and I could really tell the difference in my hair. Don't get me wrong---it was moisturized---but not silky smooth or soft as when I deep condition overnight. As I installed my perm rods, I had to re-wet most of the sections because the hair dried out much faster. Deep conditioning overnight may not work will for some---but I think that my hair is better off (for now...my hair is a sick fickle beast) with it than without it. Overnight deep conditioning will be back next week for sure.

    Modere Antioxidant Hair Serum-
Because of the good results that I got from Modere Antioxidant Hair Serum during the week. I decided to use it in place of Chi Silk Infusion in my #washdayexperience. It disappeared into my wet hair almost as if I didn't apply anything at all. It provided a little slip and a little sheen, but not enough to really wow me. I think that this one is better as a daily shine enhancer to tame flyaways than anything else. Don't worry Silk Infusion---your spot in my regimen is still safe.

    Hair Chalk-
It's amazing what you find when you clean out your stash! Remember my hair chalk? Man---I was in love with this stuff last year! Anywhos, I pulled out the teal and chalked the tips of a few of the curls before pulling it all up into a messy high pony tail. You can click here for my tutorial on How to Use Hair Chalk on Relaxed hair.

I felt so ratchet. But whatevs dude---if you can't have fun with your hair then what's the point right?!?

How was your #washdayexperience? Any special styles for Thanksgiving?

[Hairstyle] Wash Day | Steam Rollers

I decided to stop being lazy and treat my hair to a full #washdayexperience this week after doing two oil rinses last week. I loved the way that my hair felt, but I did notice that the oil in my hair attracted all kinds of dust and dirt. And---it was pretty gross by day 4. So my suggestion is...don't be like lazy KLP. Only oil rinse when you're fully committed to giving yourself a wash day within 1-2 days.

    1. Pre-shampoo- I detangled my hair using a little extra virgin coconut oil separating my hair into 6 extra large bantu knots to keep my hair from tangling up again.
    2. Shampoo- Then I hopped into the shower and methodically rinsed each section, applied Jessicurl Cleansing Cream to my scalp then rinsed and moved on of the next section. This shampoo is so gentle that it doesn't need to be diluted.
    3. Deep Condition- After gently drying each knot (while it was still raveled) with a cotton t-shirt, I applied Jessicurl Deep Treatment from root to tip then massaged in a little extra virgin coconut oil to seal the conditioner in. I left it in overnight.
    4. Detangling treatment- The next morning, I rinsed each section. applied a dollop of Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution, worked it through my roots and rinsed.
    5. Air Dried- I applied a bit of Chi Silk Infusion to 80-85% wrapped in a cotton t-shirt.
    6. Leave ins-I used Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner to moisturize and a dab of hair butter  to seal, then I blew out my roots with cold air to stretch it and set on Caruso Steam rollers for about 30 minutes.

    The Results
I think that I like my second day Caruso Steam curls better than the first day. On day one--the curls are a bit tighter and don't flow as freely as I like. To persevere my hair at night---I pineapple. Sometimes I'll have to reset a curl here or there but considering that it only takes 5-10 minutes---it's worth it. My second day hair is more wavy and unstructured. If I had it to do all over again, I would have blown out my hair the day before then tossed in a few rollers the next day. I'm still learning.

Jessicurl Deep Treatment | Product Review
My love for Jessicurl runs deep. With every order, you get a free sample sized product. Because my strands and shampoo usually doesn't mix---I ordered the Cleansing cream. After all, why spend money on a full sized bottle of something that might only get a one and done. But this little sulfate free gem surprised me. It has so much slip that I almost busted my behind in the shower. (Or maybe that was due to my silly happy dance. *Kanye Shrug* I guess the world will never know) And it detangles. Yes. You read that right: A shampoo that ACTUALLY aids in detangling. I definitely owe you a full review.

Jessicurl Deep Treatment and Too Shea don't disappoint either. Honestly---I wonder why I use anything else sometimes. Then I remember my debilitating illness. My ooohhh-look-at-that-new-conditioner/shampoo/leave-in cream/styler-that-I'm-compelled-to-try-even-though-I-have-enough-hair-products-to-style-a-small-country-illness. Product Junkism, why can't I quit you?!?!?

    I digress.

I wanted to look super fancy and sassy for our family pictures. We take pictures at least twice a year and we use them for e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. Birthday cards, mother's day presents, father's day coffee cups, Christmas calendars. We color coordinate. It's that serious and I don't care if you judge me. But I gets hype for picture day! And--yes---I already know that I'm weird. It makes me unique.

I loved my hair and totally loved the pictures. I just wanna hug my computer screen when these minions pop up.

    How was your #washdayexperience?

    [Review] Joico K-PAK RevitaLuxe

It seems like every single week I chat about protein. How much my hair loves it. How well protein layering works on my relaxed ends. How I really wouldn't have made it 73 weeks post relaxer without all of my relaxed ends breaking off it. Well---I guess that it was time that I share my {current} favorite protein conditioner: Joico K-Pak RevitaLuxe!

    Price: $5.99-$33.99 USD
    Buy It At: Amazon.com
Promises: A luxurious restorative treatment that corrects years of damage while protecting against future damage. Keratin Peptide Complex delivers over 2X more resistance to breakage while protecting against color fade by 94%. Your hair will become dramatically stronger, softer, shinier and more moisturized with each application.

Ingredients: Water/Aqua/Eau, Glycerin, Behentrimonium Chloride, Propylene Glycol, Amodimethicone, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, PEG-8 Distearate, Sorbitol, Sodium Chloride, Glycol Stearate, Ceteth-2, Pentapeptide-29 Cysteinamide, Pentapeptide-30 Cysteinamide, Tetrapeptide-28 Argininamide, Tetrapeptide-29 Argininamide, Keratin Amino Acids, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Cocodimonium Hydroxypropyl Hydrolyzed Keratin, Hydrolyzed Keratin PG-Propyl Methylsilanediol, Aleurites Moluccana Seed Oil, Psidium Guajava Fruit Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Glycolipids, Hyaluronic Acid, Isopropyl Alcohol, Myristyl Myristate, Citric Acid, Diazolidinyl Urea, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Bis-Isobutyl PEG/PPG-20/35/Amodimethicone Copolymer, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol, Polyquaternium-10, Sorbic Acid, Polysorbate 80, Trideceth-12, Cetrimonium Chloride, Butylene Glycol, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Thioctic Acid, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Allantoin, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Sodium Hydroxide, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Limonene, Geraniol, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Fragrance/Parfum, Yellow 5 (CI 19140), Red 4 (CI 14700).

My Thoughts: This conditioner is simply amazing. It's moisturizing and strengthening with a great scent and super thick rich consistency. My hair easily absorbs it and just a little goes a long way. This isn't a conditioner that you want to use when you have tangles and need slip. But this is the conditioner that you want to use to help fortify your strands with a boost of strengthening keratin and amino acids.

I'd label Jocio K-Pak as a medium protein conditioner on my strands. It doesn't harden as it dries like you'd get from a hard protein treatment. But there is a noticeable difference in your hair's texture. Expect your strands to feel "plumper" almost thicker after a few uses. I've also noticed that my hair retains moisture better and longer when I use this conditioner on a regular basis. In fact, I got away with only moisturizing and sealing only on wash day for several weeks when I protein layered with this conditioner without crazy breakage.

The huge pink elephant in the room? OMGosh---did you see that price? Ladies---that price tag is no joke. So here's my suggestion. Grab the $6 sample (1.7oz) travel sized bottle if you want to test it out. #ballinonabudget

Have you ever used Joico K-PAK? Would you buy it again?

How To Run With Your Dog | #FitnessFriday

This is Diego and he is the world's best running partner. He'll stalk me like a hawk when he sees me in my workout gear---he already knows what time it it! This dude NEVER complains. Never allows me to slow down--even when I'm tired. And he's always game for an extra mile or two. My family adopted him about 3 years ago from our local animal shelter and we've been running partners ever since.

My father-in-law was a dog trainer in the military. He kinda taught me everything that a know about anything to do with pups. It's #FitnessFriday and today I'm sharing the do's and don'ts for running with your dog:

    Don't:
    1. Don't let your dog lead- Train your dog to run beside you. Never in front and never pulling on the leash. You are the master and you lead.
    2. No harnesses or retractable leashes- According to the ASPCA can actually increase pulling from your dog---and cause you to get injured. Retractable leashes are unsafe for use on trails with other runners and cyclists who usually can’t see the line and get entangled or injured.
    3. Don't over-exhaust your dog- Your dog will run as long and as hard as you do. Remember dogs don't sweat, so don't push your dog too far too fast. They have to build endurance just like humans.
    Do:
    1. Let your dog handle his/her business BEFORE you start running- No brainer here. Running with a loaded poop bag is torture. Having to stop at every tree, sign, bush is soooo painful. Give your dog time to get it all out---then start your run. A mile usually does the trick for Diego. Also try not to feed your pup right before a run. Eating too close to exercise time can make your dog's tummy ache.
    2. Command your dog to always sit at crosswalks, busy interactions, and stop signs- This allows you to safely check for motorist before you cross without worrying about your dog getting nervous about motorist.
    3. Travel doggie water, poop bags, and an animal first aid kit- No one wants to carry a 30lb dog home because he hurt his paw. Hydrate often and please don't be that loser that doesn't pick up your dog's business. Everyone hates that guy.
I love running with Diego because it makes me feel just a smidge safer when I don't have a human partner. (even though he's really a scaredy cat). Gradually build mileage with your dog and know that the first few times out will be more about the dog’s training, not yours. You might run a little slower and have to get accustomed to handling your dog + running your best.

Do you run with your dog? What are your secrets?

[Hairstyle] Messy High Bun + Oil Rinsing | WashDayExperience

Love simply does not express how much I enjoyed my hair last week. Steam Rollers are the bomb.com and my hair felt super strong yet still very moisturized. I wore my hair down for 2 days then in a low bun with a few curls to frame my face. For the first time in weeeekkksss I actually had fun with my hair! Even though I kinda suck at cold air tension drying my hair, I will admit that it was MUCH much easier to manage throughout the week and tossing in a few steam rollers took no time at all! #score! Here are a few ways that I styled my hair afterwards:

With my DIY Jeweled Headwarmer. Omg---My ears were sooo toasty! Plus it was super humid and my head warmer covered up all of the frizz. I love this thing! Want to know how I made it? Pep the tutorial here!

Yes---that is the same headband from my tutorial. Shh...Don't tell nobody! I love a good multifunctional hair accessory. I have A LOT of hair accessories. Probably too many for my own good. But I always end up wearing the same ones! #hairbloggerfail

Because my hair still felt amazing by the time that wash day, instead of the usual deep conditioning etc etc, I decided to just oil rinse. Okay---let me back track. This is what really happened: I'd planned on doing a real wash day, started applying coconut oil to my hair yada yada, then I realized that I had somewhere to be in 30 minutes. Yep. Hair slicked down with oil and somewhere to go. Total fail. So I jumped in the shower, rinsed thoroughly, then jumped out. To my surprise, my hair loved it! Here are the details:

    1. Oil rinse- As I detangled my hair, I applied extra virgin coconut oil from root to tip in 6 sections. I let sit for about 5 minutes then rinsed with warm water.
    2. Leave ins- I t-shirt dried my hair for 5 minutes, blotting each section, then applied Jessicurl Too Shea! Conditioner and just a dab more coconut oil. I quickly cool air tensioned dried the sections and pulled my hair into a high bun to dry completely.

    The Results:
Oil Rinsing is pure genius! No doubt that I'll probably do it again for sure. The slickness of the extra virgin coconut oil provided slip to detangle and helped me remove all of the shed hair that I had. I love how my hair felt refreshed without my scalp or my hair feeling dry.

I'll probably wash my hair for real in a day or two. I don't really think that oil rinsing is a substitute for washing, but that it allows you to extend the days between washing. Because I gave the oil a good rinsing with water, my hair didn't feel crazy oily after drying. It actually felt even more moisturized and fluffy.

Now take a look at this cute-who knew that I could make something so easy look so intricate-bun! Once I figure out how exactly I did this---I'll totally do a tutorial. This #washdayexperience was filled with lots of firsts, oops, and accidents but no tears. woot!

Did you have any happy surprises during your #washdayexperience? We'd love it if you shared!

    My Half-Marathon Training Schedule #FitnessFriday

I've been running 5ks and 10ks for a few years now---I love them. The excitement of training and having something to look forward to. The bling. Y'all know that I LOVE my race bling! The accomplishing feeling of doing something for just me. Not for my kids, not for my hubby, not for work. Just me.

Last week, while I was working out with my BlackGirlsRun buddy, she asked why I hadn't run a half-marathon yet. My reply: Um...hello...it's 13.1 miles! Enough said right? But then she reminded me that I can run 5k even 10k with a sub 9 and still hold a conversation. She told me flat out: "You're not challenging yourself anymore."

That hit me like a ton of bricks. After all, isn't the reason why I run to challenge myself? So, I amped myself up, got pumped and signed up for my FIRST half-marathon race! I've walked a half-marathon before---but I've never run over 10 miles straight. Needless to say, I really need to put a training plan in place. Welcome to #FitnessFriday 2.0 with my goregous co-hosts Lexi, Britt, Ebony, and Dani. Today I'm sharing my half-marathon training plan! Here's what I got so far:

RunKeeper's Sub 2:15 Half Marathon Training Plan (3-4 days a week)
I love the RunKeeper app and I was stoked to find that they have a half-marathon training plan! The training plan slowly advances both my volume and pace so I can reach race day ready to finish with a time of sub 2:15 without getting hurt in the training process. Oh yeah! This plan has me running 11:15 to 11:50 pace or slower, which will be hard for my legs to get used to. I have to remind myself that this race isn't about a personal best time but about finishing!

Strength Training (10-20 minutes a day)
Runners need to do more than just run.” My biggest fear with this half training is getting hurt. Getting hurt is no fun and reducing the chance of injury can be done with 10-20 minutes a day of strength training. I guess that I won't be abandoning my Jillian Michaels DVDs after all!

    Walking (warm-up/cool down daily)
I've realized that I run better when I'm warm. My body feels better and I can better control my breathing. Since I struggle with my asthma is this a win/win! Usually a mile or so does the trick. The same with my cool down.

    Rest
The likelihood of me not doing anything at all on rest days is pretty crazy. So for now, my goal is to do yoga on rest days. Yoga is low impact and will help stretch out my muscles from a week's worth of training.

Anyone else training for a race? What is your secret?

    Besitos!

    [Tutorial] DIY Jeweled Knit Headwarmer

My favorite part of winter are the layers! Chunky sweaters, fluffy scarves, cozy jackets and toasty headwarmers. The likehood of me wearing a headwarmer daily this winter is about 1000% because I HATE it when my ears are cold. In yesterday's #washdayexperience I shared my (current) fave headwarmer. Here's how I bedazzled it in two---yes TWO easy steps. No sewing or gluing required!

    What you'll need:

A knit headwarmer- If you're a rockstar and know how to crochet, I say MAKE IT! Here's a fanastic crochet pattern from Nikki In Stitches. But if you're a little incompetent---and really impatient like me, pick one up from World Market or on Etsy!

Jeweled Headband- Yep. That's my secret. It's just a headband attached to a headwarmer y'all! Sneaky right? And I bet that you already have just the CUTEST headband in your closet waiting to be re-purposed!

2 Bobby pins- Because I like to interchange the bedazzlement--- #yesthatsaword #becauseIjustmadeitup #Iseethatjudgeylookonyourface #butImacoolkid #backtothetutorial---I use bobby pins to secure the headband to the headwarmer. If you want a more permanment design, you can defintinely through a few stitches on each side of the headband---or better yet, use a sassy applique and a little hot glue. The sky is the limit here for sure.
    How To:

Step 1- Fold the headband flat and tuck through the headwarmer loop.

Step 2- Use a bobby pin to secure each end in place.

    Viola! You're done!

[Hairstyle] Caruso Steam Rollers | WashDayExperience

I'm so bored with my hair I could just scream. Usually, I have a plan of attack and style in mind before I start my #washdayexperience but this week---nothing. Nada. Zip. I love me some perm rods but I'm not that quick on the installation tip (it takes me roughly 1 1/2 hours), my bantu knot curls have been hit or miss (with mostly misses and updos), I've been really itching to give myself a good flat iron + trim (especially since my terrible detangling mishap caused me to snip several knots out of my hair). As I sat looking stupid at my freshly deep conditioned hair, opted for the down and dirty quick route: a tension blow dry and caruso steam rollers. Plus---I've gotta hot date with the hubby tonight. #woot Here's how my #washdayexperience went:

    1. Pre-Poo-  I detangled my hair in about 8 sections then applied Extra Virgin Coconut Oil from root to tip. I covered with a plastic cap and let it sit for a few hours.
    2. Shampoo- Working in with each section, I massaged a little diluted Matrix Hydrasource Shampoo, lightly detangled and rinsed.
    3. Extreme Deep Condition- Next, I applied Matrix Hydrasource Conditioner to my roots and Joico K-Pak Revitaluxe from the line of demarcation to my ends. Afterwards, I applied a little extra virgin coconut oil from root to tip to seal in the conditioner. I covered with a plastic cap and let marinate overnight.
    4. Tea Rinse- I hopped in the shower to rinse the conditioner section by section. Then I applied my tea rinse of 2 green tea bags + 1 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of glycerin. I let the mixture sit on my hair for about 5 minutes.
    5. Detangling Treatment- I rinsed the tea then applied a Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution.
    6. Air Dried- I applied a bit of Chi Silk Infusion to 80-85% wrapped in a cotton t-shirt.
    7. Leave ins-I used Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner to moisturize and extra virgin coconut oil to seal, then tension blow dried my hair.

    The results:
Towards the end of last week, my hair started to feel awkward. A little coated and a lot dirty.  My moisturizer wasn't absorbing like it usually does. I knew that for this wash day, I'd need to shampoo. Shampooing once a month typically does the trick for me. In between, I'll use my shampoo bar or cleansing conditioner if necessary.

I don't tension blow dry my hair often because I well---I'm not just not that great at handling my blower. I kinda fumble with the controls and always find a way to spray air into my face. I have no clue how Jeni (the bestest co-host in the world, btw) does it so flawlessly!

I let the steam rollers cool for about 30 minutes before unraveling and apply a little Chi Silk Infusion. If you guys haven't realized by now...I love that stuff! I apply it to my freshly rinsed deep conditioned hair to aid in detangling and for a light shot of protein. I also love the way that it gives my hair super shine.
