The Bun Effect: 30 in 30 (Day 30)

Double Bun

Quick How To:
  1. Moisturize and detangle hair.
  2. Split hair in half horizontally.
  3. Pull each half into messy buns.
  4. Use a Scunci Upzing comb to smooth roots and create a bump in the front of your hair.
This Double bun style can be jazzed up by playing around with the bump in the front of your hair. Try a pompadour, twist, or braid.

The Bun Effect: 30 in 30 (Day 29)

Hidden Fishtail Roll

Quick How To:
  1. Moisturize and detangle hair. (This style was created on air dried hair)
  2. Create a side part then separate hair ear to ear. Clip front sections up and away.
  3. Split back section in half. Fishtail/french braid the top half.
  4. Pull the left side across the back of your head. Secure with a pin. Repeat with the left side.
  5. Roll the reminding hair up into a giant finger curl then secure with pins on each end.
Since I'm still perfecting my fishtail braid technique, I thought that it might be best to hide it a little. In the photo I did a mix of fishtail and french braiding.I think that my fingers got a little confused during the braiding. Ha-ha! Oh well---It looks more interesting this way. Sorry for all the frizzies. 80% humidity is getting the best of my up-styles.

Side French Twist with a Twist

Oh how I do adore this look! I only got a chance to wear it on errands but I received tons of compliments. I can't wait to wear this one for a special occasion.

  1. Moisturize and detangle hair. (This style was performed on air dried hair)
  2. Create a side part then separate hair ear to ear.
  3. Pull the left side across the back of your head. Secure with a pin. Repeat with the left side.

  5. Double strand twist the remaining section then pull it across the top of your side french twist. Use a pin to tuck it into the opening of the curl on the opposite side.

Mini Wash Day

Styling this week was far easier than it was last week. Nothing like a good wash day and detangling session to get your hair back on track. Last week, I ditched green tea moisturizing in favor of using my It's a 10 Miracle Leave In and then slighting with EVCO or argan oil. I think that I'm forever sold on the 2-comb detangling method. My roots were easier to manage and seemed to behave better (read: lay down!) than they did without it.

(0) Detangled with my magic rake in vertical sections.
(1) Extreme deep condition with Philip Kingsley Flaky/Itchy Scalp Toner, my essential oil blend, and a little JBCO on my scalp. Plus a 3-1 ratio of Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Treatment and Roux Porosity Control Conditioner on the length of my hair. I massaged a little EVCO through my strands, covered with a plastic cap and sat under my heat cap forever and a day. Ha-ha. It was really about 3 hours.
(2) Tea Rinse with 2 green tea bags steeped 2 cups of water. I rinsed the conditioner thoroughly. Applied the tea rinse with a narrow tip applicator bottle and then let it sit on my hair for 5 minutes while in the shower.
(3) Smoothing treatment with Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Daily Treatment. I rinsed the tea and massage a dollop of conditioner to my strands. I did a little light detangling very very gently.
(4) Air dried with a cotton t-shirt until my hair was about 80% dry.
(5) Leave Ins- I detangled using the 2 comb method while adding a little It's a 10 Miracle Leave in and Chi Silk Infusion to each section.

Results:
Big Big Hair! I never get tired of saying that. Don't shoot me if you are tired of hearing it. Ha-ha! I just realized that I may want to relax a little early this stretch. My family is going on vacation in about 3 weeks and I totally do not want to deal with 11 week post hair poolside or 2 hour detangling sessions just to get my hair presentable. I usually rock braidouts, high buns, and my 30 second old faithful updo but we're having a huge birthday bash that I want to look my very best for (read: I want to be able to flip my hair for). Oh...what's a chica to do?

A penny for your thoughts: relax a little early or just deal?

Hola Chicas!

Well, I had a wedding to go too this weekend so I had all plans to heat it up! lol but surprisingly I actually went kinda no heat (i did curl my bangs lol)  with my style. Can I say...My table got a shout out by the wedding dj! lol we were turnt up! Best wedding EVER! :D

(1) Detangled with my magic comb! - There were not many tangles in my hair, thankfully!

(2) Prepooed with Essential Oil Mix/JBCO on my scalp and Emergencia Intensive Moisture Split Ends Conditioner (I need to use the rest of this!) on length of my hair.

(3) Shampooed with Nexxus Therappe Luxurious Moisturizing Shampoo (I only have a little bit left!) I also cowashed my scalp with Creme of nature before shampoo.

(4) DC with Biolage Matrix Conditioning Balm and cleaned around house for a 2 hours!

(5) Tea Rinse with one of my faves Lavender and Chamomile Tea! I also placed some Nexxus Hydralight Moisture Conditioner on my hair to massage it a bit before rinsing it all completely out.

(6)Leave ins were my Organix Coconut Anti-breakage Serum, and Aphogee Keratin & Green Tea Restructurizer

Hair Reality: My hair was sooooooooooooooooooooo SOFT and I almost felt like there was still product in my hair lol. Too good to be true! I air dried 100% and it was soo lovely! I just realize I seriously need to buy me some philip kingsley asap! I got my hair style inspiration from Beyonce! Countdown video :D

Directions: First, I seperated out my bangs then placed my hair in a high ponytail. I took the hair of my pony tail and pin curled it up towards my forehead. Due to my layers, I had to spread my hair out to have a even look. Then bobby pinned away. Curled my bangs with my flat iron! Then placed a cute headband. Vaalaaa!

The Bun Effect: 30 in 30 (Day 23)

Fistail Giant Top Knot

Inspired by Keyda's Upside down French Braid Bun, I attempted to recreate it and failed miserably. My fingers just couldn't get the hang of french braiding upside down. Then I felt a little light headed from 10 minutes with my head upside down. Ha-ha. Beauty is pain---or so they say. Finally, I settled on a fishtail braid because it was so much easier and called for a little less manipulation.

Quick How To:
  1. Detangle and moisturize hair.
  2. Split hair ear to ear. Clip front half up and away.
  3. Bend down so the back half of hair is upside down.
  4. Fishtail braid hair starting at nape working up. Braid to the ends.
  5. Gather all of hair until a giant messy bun.
Secret tip: Hide any imperfections with a cute hair accessory. Ha-ha! I rocked this style on an excursion with the hubby and kiddos to the beach. Even though it was in the high 70s, the water was freezing! I was so glad that my hair was up and out of the way because I crushed my hubby in badminton! He claimed that the sun was in his eyes. *Side eye!*

[Review] CC's Naturals Lavender & Chamomile Tea

Price: $6.00 (plus shipping)

Purchased at: www.ccsnatural.com

Promises and Ingrediants:
  • Chamomile- Works as a great natural conditioner
  • Lavender helps stimulate growth and balance oil production
  • Green Tea Stimulates Hair growth, soothes Dandruff and psoriasis, As well as strengthens and conditions.
  • Peppermint stimulates your hair follicles and promotes hair growth, used as a moisturizer for the hair shaft, Helps rid the scalp of dryness and itchiness as well..
Directions: Add 3 tablespoons or 1 large tea bag to a large pyrex glass cup or bowl and fill with boiling water and cover. Steep for about 30 minutes. When the tea is warm, apply to scalp and hair and massage thoroughly. When pouring tea onto hair and scalp, hold a bowl at the end of hair strands to catch the tea and reapply. Repeat several times. Leave In or rinse out if desired. If you use a conditioner, use this tea rinse after you condition your hair. You can also put the tea into a spray and spray onto your hair as a refresher. And then move on to your final styling regimen...

My Thoughts: I personally steep the tea for about one or two hours before beginning my wash day. I have not officially tried steeping my tea overnight, but that is a possibility! I love LOVE this tea! Shout out to Jen at www.justgrowalready.com for posting about this in her regimen! It smells delicious and I noticed softness, growth and less shedding while using this tea regularly. Even when I do not place conditioner over the tea in my hair, my hair is never too rough or hard with this tea. So, you do not necessarily need to use a smoothing conditioner but it just adds a lil extra bang! I will be trying other products from CC's naturals!

Let me know if you try it!

Reader Q&A

Updated: 5.21.2013

Internal Healthy Body Support
Q: Do have recommendations on supplements or tried made any dietary changes to increase hair growth?
A: Great question. However, I think that I have a complicated answer. I've never taken supplements (pills) specifically designated to "increase hair growth." This isn't to say that I haven't thought about it! Creo que todas las chicas pensado en eso. I think that all of us have thought about it! The only reason that I haven't gone through with it is because I've been with child or nursing for my entire hair journey. (I have two little ones, 3 and 1) Plus, I'm petrified of the possible side effects. (More hair in places other than my head, more breakouts, more migranes or a serious allergic reaction) I do, however, take 2 gummy multivitamins and 1 prenatal vitamin (my youngest is nursing). Diet-wise: I'm all about water, carrots, and greens. I've been drinking 1/2- 1 gallon of water daily for weeks now. I also faithfully swig my carrot juice (I even like the taste now), and I have a green salad (think spinach, kale, romaine, arugula, or broccoli) daily. None of these things, I do solely for hair growth purposes. Which is the cool thing about attempting to take care of you. One small change for the better pays it forward in other areas of your life.

Before considering a supplement, think on the reasons why your hair is unhealthy. Is it your external practices or could it be an internal issue that you need to speak with your doctor about?

After my first 5k
Q: You seem equally obsessed with working out and longer hair. Isn't that like trying to mix oil and water? Why spend so much time with your hair only to ruin it by sweating?
A: Obsessed? Well maybe a little! Ha-ha! Succeeding in areas of life where others have said that I would fail repetitively, makes me ridiculously happy. While pregnant with my first child, I gained 53 lbs. I remember telling my husband, "I hope that this little girl is 50lbs when she's born." Ha-ha! She wasn't---she was 8lbs 3oz---and the rest was me. I thought that the weight would just fall off; it didn't. I didn't recognize myself in mirror and decided that I wasn't going to complain about it anymore. I put in work; lost the weight plus some in about 10 months. Exercising became a way of life and I really love it now.

When I was a kid, my brothers would tease me and call me Simba because my hair was sooooo big when I had to wash it. It would grow, break, shed---grow, break, shed. I decided to make a change, put in the work, and nurture my hair so that it would continue to grow, but not break and I work to curb shedding.

Viola! Fit body; healthy hair. They can coincide. My hair does get frizzy at the gym and I'll take pride in pulling it up into a big 'ol messy bun! Plus sweat isn't the enemy. Check out our Your Hair On Series: Sweat edition

Thanks for the questions guys!

Wash Day

Have you ever had one of those wash days that just felt like it just wouldn't end?

Ugh...I felt like I've been washing my hair for days. Saturday, I went to moisturize and detangle my hair, and realized that there was no coming back from my dry roots. It wouldn't matter how much I  L.O.C'd with Tea Spray, Argan oil, and Herbal Essences Touchably Smooth Split End Protector, my hair needed to be washed. So I gently detangled, added some Nexxus Hydra-Light Conditioner, then hopped into the shower to rinse. Yeah---that didn't help at all. I had no choice but to move on. I applied a big dollop of Nexxus Hydra-Light Foaming Leave In quickly tshirt dried hair. Yeah---that just made it worse. I let it air dry, took some time to compose myself, then tried to detangle adding in HETSSEP. That helped a little. All I could do was throw it up into a Minute to Win it Style and pray that my hair didn't look as bad as it felt. (Gracias a Dios por Minute to Win it Styles!) When I went to wash, I just prayed that I wouldn't have glops and loodies of long strand breakage and shedding. I was lucky this time---but I needed to nip all this dryness in the bud and get back to my stretching basic techniques.

(0) Detangled- in vertical sections with my magic rake.
(1) Pre-poo- with an essential oil blend on my scalp and extra virgin coconut oil on the length of my hair. I let the pre-poo soak in for about 30 minutes.
(2) Shampoo- I lathered twice with Matrix Biolage Hydratherapie Hydrating Shampoo in sections concentrating the shampoo on my roots.
(3) Tea Rinse- To thwart breakage, I used 2 black tea bags steeped in 2 cups of water for my tea rinse. I applied with a narrow tip applicator and let it hang out in my hair for 5 minutes.
(4) Smoothing Treatment- Next, I rinsed the tea out and applied Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Daily Treatment (I reversed the order of my tea rinse and deep condition this wash) I really do love this treatment. I'm on a no buy strike for a few months but I'm running out! Eek!
(5) Extreme Deep Condition- My hair absolutely needed a long soak in some conditioner. I added a mix Halka Baba de Caracol and Roux Porosity Control Conditioner to my hair, and then coated my strands in extra virgin coconut oil. I deep conditioned for hours under my heating cap. During my final rinse, my hair still didn't feel as moisturized as it usually does after a mini wash, but it was much much better than Saturday's mass of tangles!
(6) Air Dry- 100%
(7) Leave ins- Detangled using the 2 comb method and then added It's a 10 Miracle Leave in and Chi Silk Infusion

Results:
Big fluffy air dried hair! After 2 days of jumping in and out of the shower, deep conditioning forever, and detangling 10-15 SSKs---my happy hair is back. I kicked L.O.C'ing aside this week to give myself some time to think about why my roots were so dry to begin with. Last week's tea spray was 1 green tea and 1 peach ginger tea bag. Maybe peach ginger tea doesn't like my hair. I also used Herbal Essences Touchably Smooth Split End Protector to seal instead of Jessicurl's Too Shea Conditioner. Maybe Age in ATL from Loving MY Hair
was right. That stuff is great when your deep in a stretch.

I'm so happy that this wash day is over. Now back to The Bun Effect! 10 more days; I hope that I can make it!

Was your wash day as long and drawn out as mine?

  3. Part the front section into a deep side part. Pull the largest section (only) towards your face then braid starting at the roots and down to the ends. (This will take a little practice)
  4. Flip the twist back then secure with a bobby pin in the direction of your opposite ear.
  5. Pull the last section towards your face and flat twist starting at the roots and down to the ends.
  6. Flip back this final twist and secure with a bobby pin.

Vintage Bang & Bun

I have a (not so secret now) love of all things multipurpose, simple, and timeless.Things are the charateristics that I see when I look at 1940s-50s hair styles. They are a little extra, ooze glamour, and totally Betti Page!

Quick How to:
  1. Detangle and moisturize hair. (I started with a 2 day old bantu knot set.)
  2. Split the front of your hair into a large triangle. Using a rat (like this one by Hair Art), roll your hair very tightly forward. Pin the ends of the rat so that it looks like an "U" using bobby pins. You'll want to criss-cross your pins for extra security.
  3. Spread your hair along the rat to cover. You may want to spritz with a little hair spray if you want extra holding power.
  4. My hair rebelled against a high bun on this day, so I created 2 flat twists on each side then pinned the remaining hair up into a bun.

Summer Approaching: SOS Swim Hair

Ready for Summer Fun!
Time for some Summer Fun! I just got the "Just keep Swimming...Just Keep Swimming ...Swimming..." lol Stuck in my head... And everyone knows the movie right!? (Imma be upset if nobody says the right movie lol)

Like I shared in my previous post, I have had to "master" (still perfeccting definitely) my hair care regimen during the summer because I am a SWIM INSTRUCTOR! :) I get to be held on for dear life by 5 year olds....jumped on from behind by 7 year olds who think their drowning....and occasionally kicked in the stomach as these children perfeccttt their free style lol .... all in all.. those floaties come off and there are some strong swimmers made! haha ... anyhoooo...I know many of you chicas will be swimming lotss or at some point this summer sooooo as promised here are some tips to keeping your hair strong and healthy!!

Swim Hair Tips:

A. Proper Attire: I know... I know...They are not cute...but swim caps can help keep the amount of chlorine/salt water/whatever to a minimum if you wear them. However, I understand that you may just want to look cute lol... So, if you are a frequent swimmer like me...then a swim cap is a MUST! If you are just going on vacay, I recommend braiding or pinning your hair up and away. Try your best to not just ponytail because that will cause ALOT of damage. I have also realized that braiding my hair then going thru the process....makes a cute braid-out :) while on vacay!

B. Moisture...Moisture: You should already be working on that protein-moisture balance but when it comes to swimming...increase the moisture! Chlorine has drying properties that will just make your hair ekkkkyyy ...soo you want to keep moisture in your strands. You want to make sure you do not skip moisturizing your hair on a swim day. Throughout this most...you will notice I go back to moisture!

C. Leave-in Conditioner: I would recommend putting your leave-in conditioner in your hair as a barrier before swimming. You could put swim cap over or just go in! If you do not have one, you can try Ion Swimmers Leave -In

D. Rinsing then Wash: Always... ALWAYS... Do a quick rinse at the pool shower after swimming...Get that stuff out! lol ...Never skip out on that... Then you can head home or to your hotel room for the full on wash!

E. Swim Shampoo: I like to basically "clarify" my hair weekly, since I swim every day. I will sometimes wash every other week depending on my hair. If you are on vacation, I would recommend this if you have no plans to continue jumping in the water. These shampoos should not be used on a daily basis! Here is a good one, Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three ...I have also read review but have not used yet..  Ion Swimmers Shampoo

F. The Process: After washing your hair with a swim shampoo, wash with your moisturizing shampoo...then deep condition and vaaalaaa....style away... #noheatftw! If you are a frequent swimmer, I highly recommend little to no heat... to be honest, during swim lesson season, my hair rarely sees a flat iron :( lol ...I braid my hair alot over summer!

Co-washing is your friend! (Or KLP's Mini-wash process!) If you are a frequent swimmer or want to travel lightly, co washing is the best way to help get rid of chlorine and keep your hair moisturized.

Last tip.. Always pay attention to your ends! They will let you know if you need to cut back on that swimming!

Hope these tips helped! Have fun swimming ladies!!

Work It Out Bun

Spring pollen count is as high as can be. Therefore, I'm indoors as much as possible. Allergies and I just don't get along. After a crazy April & May, I'm trying to get back into the gym regularly. Air dried hair is much more resilient to BodyCombat, Spin and Pilates classes than sleek and smooth tresses are. Ha-ha. If I'm not wearing a high messy bun, my hair is in this Work it out bun:

Quick How to:
  1. Detangle and moisturize your hair.
  2. Split from ear to ear then create a side part. Create a small flat twist braid on each side braiding to the end of each section.
  3. Repeat again on both sides to creating two flat twists.
  4. Gather all hair back into a low bun.
  5. Secure with pins.
I know that I've really worked out when I have to redo my front flat twists before I want to be seen in public.

Simple and sweet today mamitas!
