Hair Chalk Highlights Preview

I'm test driving my golden hair chalk this week. I've never had highlights before, so it looks really foreign to me. And a quick note: do not chalk your roots. I did---then worked out and sweated gold all over the place. Smh.

So what do you think? Hit or Miss?

Wash Day

I was so spoiled by deep conditioning over night two weeks ago, that I tried it again with today's wash. Winter is a harsh mistress and my hair just hasn't been its moisturized self. I'm considering adding weekly overnight deep conditions to my regimen to combat the dryness that's been plaguing my hair, skin, and nails:
Wash Day Products
  1. Detangle- with my fingers.
  2. Pre-poo- with extra virgin coconut oil.
  3. Shampoo- one lather with Macadamia Natural Oil Rejuvenating Shampoo.
  4. Protein Treatment- I applied Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque to only my texlaxed ends then covered with a plastic cap and sat under my heat cap for 15 minutes.
  5. Extreme Deep Condition- I applied Matrix Biolage Ultra-Hydrating Balm to my strands (root to tip), then massaged my strands in extra virgin coconut oil. I covered with a plastic cap, relaxed under my heat cap for about 2 hours, then left it in overnight.
  6. Air Dried- to 80-85% wrapped in a cotton t-shirt.
  7. Leave-Ins- Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner and my kitchenista Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter.
Results:
Bantu Knots

The Rookies: This was my first time using Macadamia shampoo and conditioner together. My hair still hates shampoo. After rinsing my pre-poo, my hair felt really good. My strands weren't tangled and or clumped. After rinsing the shampoo, my hair felt stripped, matted, and just a hot mess. I don't see myself using shampoo more than once a month. After all, if it ain't broke then don't fix it right? Adding the protein treatment on top of that tangled mess wasn't the best idea that I've had in a while, but I'm committed to fighting breakage and strengthening my ends (to increase my length retention) so it was a necessary evil. I don't have much to say about the Macadamia Natural Oil Deep Repair Masque except that it claims to strenghten hair---and that claim is definitely true. My hair definitely felt stronger, but I'd never not follow this protein packed conditioner with an ultra-moisturizing treatment.

The Sophomores- I introduced Tea Rinsing and a smoothing treatment into my regimen earlier this year. With this wash, I skipped Tea Rinsing; not so bad. I also skipped my Smoothing/Detangling treatment using Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution. *Le sigh* I've been on the fence for months now about this detangler but now that I've experienced a wash day without it---I will never go back! The slip and detangling abilities that this product has on my 21 week post hair is ridiculous! Now I see why I've been able to manage my roots so well with it.

The Seniors- Extreme deep conditioning has been a must for me for a long time. But Overnight deep conditioning kicks things up a notch and it's exactly what my hair needs this winter. Moist soft but strong ends+ elastic springy roots= a happy me! Matrix Biolage Ultra-Hydrating Balm always does my hair good. Detangling was tedious and my lost hair was a bit more than I'm used to, but it wasn't extreme. I've made a mental note not to skip tea rinsing or smoothing treatments any more!

After I air dried, I bantu knotted my hair (without holding product) for about 2 hours, unravelled and went with the hubby to see The Best Man Holiday. If you haven't seen it. Go!

How was your latest wash day?

Weekly Wishes

Op #TeamNice was in full effect last week, courtesy of my wish to just be kind. For the first time in a long time, I felt refreshed and revitalized internally. Here's how I got started:
  1. Being kind to me: I have a crazy busy schedule. Think up at 0500 and sleep at 1100 without much chill time in between. Whilst, I've realized that I like it that way---there are more times than not that it really gets to me when I can't get something done. Whether it's that I've overbooked, I'm exhausted from the other 90 billion thing that I had to do that weren't on my schedule, or I frankly just didn't want to do it---when the to-do list is longer than my I did it list, I get down on myself. So last week, I reclaimed space my in brain from mean thoughts about me. I know---it sounds a little loca, but I refused to get frustrated when something didn't get done and I concentrated on giving the things that did get done the best of me.
  2. Being kind when others aren't so kind back: I'm a smiler. I may not speak, but I'll always smile to acknowledge others when I'm out and about. But it's weird because I have some not so friendly loser neighbors that never return the gesture. At times, they even ignore me. Rude? Yes. Does that mean that I'll stop smiling? Nope. I'm going to kind whether they like it or not!
  3. Being ready to pay it forward: I'm always ready to answer hair obsessed questions---but when I got a sweet email from a loyal reader---that wasn't about shampooing or conditioning---I was stumped. She asked for guidance about military life and I really didn't know where to begin. Even though I was slightly out of my comfort zone, I forced myself to reply---and reply in a timely fashion. Her response of gratitude literally rocked my weekend.
Because Op #TeamNice was such a success last week and left me with an amazing bubbly feeling of euphoria that I'm totally committing to it again this week. I'm also wishing for laser sharp focus and determination so that I stay on top of my real work so that I'm not working on Thanksgiving. Cheers to new beginnings!

Healthy Hair Insight: Hair Chalk

I've been thinking about a little change of pace. I've learned to love my hair color but I'm thinking of experimenting with something a little brighter. I'm still all about healthier hair so nothing drastic or permanent or damaging is required. That doesn't leave me with many traditional options---that is until I bought this super cute hair chalk palette for under $10. I'll probably never use the uber bright colors, however, I'm thinking an auburn or blonde faux highlight would be cute on a bantu knot set. Thank you Goupon!

What do you think? Would you use hair chalk?

Busted Braidouts Into Beautiful Updos

Braidouts hate me. No seriously. I can't get a defined fluffy big braid out to save my life. I try. I fail. I try again. I fail again. However, the best part of a busted braid out is the way that it gives an updo life, honey! Y'all have met my Old Faithful 30 Second Style many many times. I've sported this style on straightened hair, air dried hair, bantu curled hair, and now {busted} braid out hair. I've done it so many times that I can do it without a mirror, one bobby pin, and in 30 seconds with a baby on my hip. Sometimes, I add a braided bang. Occasionally, I do a deep side part. Whilst, other times, I throw in a great hair accessory. No matter how I change this style up, it always begins these steps:

Old Faithful 30 Second Style-
  1. Moisturize and detangle hair.
  2. Split hair into two sections.
  3. Bring your hair from one section to the front. Begin a french braid, instead of braiding to the back, braid to the front. (If this doesn't make sense at first, watch and re-watch the video.) Continue your braid to the end of your length.
  4. Repeat on the other side.
  5. Take one of the braids and cross it over the back of your head. Secure with a bobby pin. Repeat with the other side.
  6. Tuck in all of the loose ends.
Whilst, I'm not giving up on braidouts by any means, I am going to stick with what I do best: bantu knots. What style to you turn to when your braidout hates you?

[Hairstyle] Messy Side French Roll | Mini Wash

How I wore my hair last week
Deep conditioning overnight might not be an every wash day event, but let me tell you this chicas, it's my new must do after a protein treatment now. My hair felt so amazing after my wash last week. Think soft, cottony, and springy. My roots were happy. The texlaxed length was happy. KLP was happy! I skipped my mid-week co-washing session and even thought for a second to delay my wash day because my hair felt so good. But, I figured that I wasn't so smart and went with a light protein conditioner to keep my tresses balanced.
  1. Detangled- with my fingers.
  2. Extreme deep condition- with JBCO on my scalp, a mix of Aphogee 2 Minute Reconstructor and Organix Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Instant Recovery Mask on the length of my hair and sealed the conditioner with coconut oil. I covered with a plastic cap, relaxed under my heat cap for about 2 hours.
  3. Green Tea Rinse- After rinsing the conditioner, I applied steeped green tea, using a narrow tip applicator to my strands--focusing on the roots. I let it sit for a few minutes then rinsed.
  4. Smoothing Treatment- with a large dollop of Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution.
  5. Air Dried- to 80-85% wrapped in a cotton t-shirt.
  6. Leave-Ins- Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner and my kitchenista Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter.

30 Second Ol' Faithful Style
After applying my leave-ins, I wanted to do something different with my hair and decided to attempt a braid out. Bad. Idea. Very. Bad. Idea. I double strand twisted my hair into 8 sections and secured the ends with a satin roller. In the morning, I unraveled to a bloody mess. Oh gosh, It was a fail on sooo many levels. The bird's nest in my front yard looks better. The definition was wonky, I had neck length shrinkage, and my ends looked ever so pitiful. Never have I been more thankful for the Bun Effect. I pulled my hair into my all time favorite 30 second updo (here's a how to tutorial) and went to church. The good news was that my hair still felt soft with a renewed strength and my shedding/breakage was low. Woot for happy endings.

What styles do you use to save failed twists outs, bantu knots, or curls?

SOS On Deck : Coffee Oil

Hola Chicas!!
Coffee Oil Curtesy of OddStrandOut

My scalp is forever acting out. It's constantly shedding, super itchy, and flaky all over the place. (i.e. Why I buy the ridiculously-expensive Philip Kingsley Scalp Toner. Ugh. I really wish that my hair didn't love it so much!) I'm always on the lookout for anything that can help. I noticed a pretty awesome post from Jeni of JustGrowAlready about using coffee rinses to save misbehaving scalps and I thought uhmmm interesting! But of course life happened...and I forgot all about it. Until, I got a super cute note from Danielle at OddStrandOut offering to test drive her latest gem: Coffee Oil. Yes, divas, you read that right---Coffee infused oil! Yum. Plus, with just 4 natural ingredients: Hazelnut Oil, Castor Oil, Olive Oil and Coffee,  how can you go wrong?

The Scoop

I have decided to utilize this product as a pre-poo/hot oil treatment, since it has some of my fave oils mixed in. I'm not sure what the ratio of coffee to oil is, but I assume that there's less coffee and more oil. Ha-ha! I used it in my previous wash day and my scalp looked ten times healthier than normal! I can't tell you today that it was because of the Coffee Oil but I can say that Keyda was a happy chica that day! Expect a full review in a few weeks.

Wish me luck luvssss!

Weekly Wishes

First, I want to thank everyone for their kind words of support in my wish for my superhero hubby. He's so modest that he just smiled at the post and shied away when I shared your beautiful encouragement. He's such a rock star!

This week's wish theme is memories and the timing couldn't be more perfect. Believe it or not, my partner in crime, Keyda, and I didn't get off to the best start when we first met. For some reason, rude KLP showed up and showed off that day. Not only was I mean but I was kinda obnoxious to her. Thankfully, a mutual friend stepped in, called me out, and I woman'd up to apologize. Fast toward 4 years and I really can't imagine what it would be like without her upbeat demeanor, unique perspective, and unmatched friendship. Chicas like her don't come into your life every day and very glad that she was able to see the gentler kinder totally-not-mean-girl me. So, this week I'm challenging myself to be more kind, for you really never know how one act of kindness can change your world.

What's your wish this week? Big it big or small--speak it into existence!

A Guide To Making Your Bantu Knots Last

Although those curls are totally worth it, ain't no body got time to be re-twisting up bantu knots every night to keep their curls defined and fluffy. Here's how I keep my set looking fresh for at least 3 days and what I do when things don't go according to plan:

1. Make sure that you allow enough drying time- My curls in the middle of my crown always take longer to dry then their counterparts. When you unravel before your curls are dry---just know you're bound to look like a frizzy chia pet by the end of the day.

2. Your cocktail matters: This is the only time that I'm strict about order of operations-- Moisturizer + Oil + Holding product--is the key to gorgeous curls that last. Now, I'm all about using what your hair likes but just be sure that the products that you use together like each other. Some moisturizers don't like some oils and some holding products loose their minds when compounded with some moisturizers. Date a few cocktails until you find one that you like. My current fave for long lasting curls is Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner, my Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie.

NaturallyCurly Guide to the Pineapple
3. Pineapple your heart out: I hang my head upside down and pull all of my curls to the crown of my hair then tie with a satin scarf with the knot in the front. Some days it works like a charm---other days meh...not so well. Whatever you do--don't smooth or stretch your curls. They will be flat in the morning. There are tons of pineappling methods (check out this pintutorial from naturallycurly.com), figure out what works for you and stick to it.

4. Moisturize and seal in the morning: When I moisturize before pineappling my curls turn into waves. But not moisturizing is a sin---so I just moisturize in the morning once I take down my scarf. It breathes life into my curls--which are usually looking a hot wonky mess by morning.

5. When in doubt, Bun Effect it: By day 3/4, my curls look more like waves---so I work them into a faux bob or side bun. Old or failed Bantu curls are a perfect base for an ultra-cute updo!

What are your tips to making Bantu knot curls last?

Mini Wash Day - 4 weeks post

Pin Curls

Hola Chicas!

I already have at least half inch/possibly one inch of new growth!! WTH!! I am like geessshhh! I will be heading to Hawaii mid-December *WOOT* and the way my new growth is going, I may need/want to touch-up early December which was not planned until Jan!! Soooo it's up in the air. I am also testing out a new product from Danielle at OddStrandOut. She calls it "Coffee Oil." I'm thinking that it would be great as an oil treatment on my scalp the night before wash day. Here's how my wash day went:
  1. Detangled with my Magic Rake comb.
  2. Prepoo with Coffee Oil Mix/EVCO on my scalp and On dry hair, As I Am: Hydration Elation Intensive Conditioner on length of my hair, making sure I paid special attention to my ends and roots. Then I sealed it all in with grapeseed oil. I sat under the hooded dryer for about 30 minutes and sat around for about an hour! I am terrible with heat...
  3. Tea Rinse with CC's Naturals Happy Hair Tea. and I love it! I think I am about ready to write a full review and share! :)
  4. Smoothing Treatment with Roux Moisture Recovery conditioner over the tea in my hair and a cap. I then faux steamed my hair for about 10 minute in shower.
  5. Leave-ins: After my hair was about 85% air dry I applied  Aphogee Keratin & Green Tea Restructurizer and Organix Coconut Anti-Breakage Serum
  6. Low Blow Dry & Flat Iron: I lightly blow dried my hair to fully straighten...then on low heat, I flat ironed my hair and pinned curled it for the night!
Pin Curls

Results:

I love the results....and although, I was not on #teamnoheat wagon this week, I feel that I did my hair justice by air drying majority and using low/medium heat for everything!! :) That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Lol. My hair was felt super strong but soft. It felt so different compared to my other deep conditioners. I definitely would want to try more of this particular DC in the future. I bought it primarirly because of the smell (haha!) but I must say I like it so far. I also noticed my scalp looked so healthy compared to other times that I've used it. I am not sure if it is the Coffee Oil Mix but I did notice a difference.

Healthy Hair Insight: My Favorite Detanglers

SOS Approved Detanglers
Every one and their mama has an opinion on when, how, and why you should detangle your tresses. My suggestion: do what works best for your hair in whatever order you prefer. Try out all of the methods and date a few products. Your journey is just that--yours. To help along the way, here are some of the best detanglers that I've tried, when I use them and why they're special to me:

Best Pre-Wash: Mizani D'Tangle
My thirsty roots soak up this milky detangler within seconds of spraying it on. Whilst it's rather thin, it gives awesome slip allowing me to remove shed hairs and tangles with ease. I love using it pre-wash to help the rest of my session roll smoothly. I'd probably never use it post wash because it leaves my hair with this icky coating that I'm not a fan of.

Best During Wash: Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution
I bought this detangler with the intentions of using it for a detangling leave in. Bad. Idea. It's just not moisturizing enough by itself for my hair. It is however, awesome for melting in wash tangles. I especially love it after my tea rinses. It rids my hair of that stiff feeling. It's slip + my high water pressure shower head gets my hair detangled in minutes without me having to manipulate my hair while wet.

Best Post Wash: It's a 10! (without keratin)
Hello slip! Which is why its my go to leave in late in my stretch to help me alleviate tangles and SSKs. If I have a particularly unruly tangle, I just spray one more pump of the leave-in on it then work out the tangle strand by strand. Its not oily and it truly does make you feel like you've added silk to your hair. I love the smoothness and softness it creates whether I air dry or use direct heat. I can't say that its an excellent moisturizer or that it gives me tons of shine---but I love having a product that I know will melt my knots but not weigh my hair down.

What's your favorite detangler and when do you use it?

Besitos!
