[Hairstyle] Fancy Floral Top Knot | The #WashDayExperience

Overwhelmed doesn't even begin to describe how I'm feeling right now. My hair has totally taken a back seat to my life and there really isn't an end in sight. The high bun is my one and only friend. I wore my Caruso Steam curls out for about 6 hours then I pulled it into a high bun; Where it stayed until today's wash day. I only took it down occasionally to do a quickie detangle, moisturize and seal---then put it back up. Do you ever have that moment when you hate being an adult? LOL. Anywhos, here's how my wash day went:

  1. Pre-shampoo- I lightly detangled and slathered my hair in extra virgin coconut oil.
  2. Shampoo- Next, I hopped into the shower for 5 minutes to rinse the oil completely. I combined about 1/2 oz of Matrix Biolage Hydrasource Shampoo with 4 oz of water in a narrow tip applicator bottle and applied to my roots only twice because my hair felt super dirty. I let the runoff cleanse my ends.
  3. Extreme Deep Condition- I applied Matrix Ultra Hydrasource Conditioner to my hair root to tip, then I massaged my stands with extra virgin coconut oil, covered with a plastic cap and left it in overnight.
  4. Tea Rinse- using 2 Bamboo tea bags steeped in 2 cups of water + 2 tbsp of glycerin.
  5. Air Dry- with Extra Virgin Coconut Oil applied to wet hair then wrapped in a satin scarf.
  6. Leave ins- I used Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner to moisturize, my kitchenista Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter to seal and then two strand twisted my hair in about 10 sections and secured with a satin roller.

The Results:
Because I've been swamped with real life, I've ditched co-washing for about two weeks. Which wouldn't be all that bad, but I also haven't shampooed my hair in 3 weeks. Needless to day, my hair felt icky. It wouldn't absorb any moisturizer, it felt tacky, and my scalp was kinda itchy. I love Matrix Hydrasource Shampoo because one wash leaves my scalp feeling clean but not stripped. I did a second lather to make sure that I got all of the gunk off my strands.

Can we give Matrix Hydrasource conditioner I high five fist bump?!? Whilst, my hair was realllly dirty---it definitely wasn't dry. The only conditioner that comes close to all of this awesomeness is Jessicurl Deep Treatment. Hello staple status for sure! If you want to see what I'm raving about enter to win your own Matrix Hydrasource collection!

Umm...so what's a word that means worse than fail? Well whatever that word is times it by 300 and you'll get how terrrribbbllleee my twist out was. I'm obviously a glutton for punishment because I keep trying and instead of getting closer to big curly waves I'm regressing into hot friggin mess territory. I didn't even attempt to save it and pulled it into a high bun. The good news is that all of the texture gave my bun some serious life, my roots were very well stretched, and my hair was super moisturized. I added a orchid headband and called it a day. Hooray for little miracles! Now...back to all this chaos!

I'm Addicted To Cardio | #FitnessFriday

Sources: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4

It's not that I don't like weight training. I just think that its boring! Lift things up. Put them down. Lift things up. Put them down. Ay dios mio---I'd need someone to put me out of my misery! When a workout is boring the chances of me doing it on a regular basis are 0.00000000000000000001%. I'm addicted to heart pumping, sweat dripping, and total body toning cardio. And I'm not ashamed to admit it! Here are my faves:

Zumba
Less workout and more party! Zumba combines the ridiculously heart pumping rhythms of Reggaeton, Salsa, Samba, Merengue, Soca, Belly dancing, and Cumbia with hip shaking, booty popping, high intensity calorie torching choreography. No weights required to get muscle definition, increased balance and dancer flexibility. Que te mueve?

Running
Go outside. Start walking. When you're tired of walking, jog. Once you're tired of jogging. Run. Then run real fast. So simple, yet very complicated. The harder you push yourself, the more you'll sweat. Oh yeah---Did I mention that it's FREE and you work almost every single muscle in your body?

Spin
Think a gym room full of stationary bikes, low lights, loud high energy music, and an instructor pedaling like a mad person. When you use the proper resistance, I guarantee that you'll leave drenched in sweat and every inch of your body will burn especially your core, back, butt, legs, and arms.

Body Combat
Ridiculously energetic, adrenaline pumping, muscle confusion. Mixes karate, boxing, tae-kwondo, tai chi and muay thai. Someone quirking your nerves? Imagine their face in your strike zone. By the end of class, trust me, you'll feel much better.

Please tell me that I'm not the only one with a cardio addiction!

[Hairstyle] Heat Free Summer Curls (Caruso Steam Roller) | The #WashDayExperience

Last wash day---I pulled my hair up into a bun. And there it stayed until this wash day. Ha-ha! I kinda moisturized and sealed. I kinda detangled. I kinda---didn't really wrap my hair at night. Inspite of my neglect, something amazing happened. As I prepped to wash my hair again, it felt AMAZING. It was still moisturized. It was still fluffy. It was still soft. Needless to say, I totally wanted a repeat performance of last week's wash day!

  1. Extreme Deep Condition- I deep conditioned on unwashed using Matrix Ultra Hydrasource Conditioner on my roots and Joico K Pak on my ends. Then I massaged my stands with extra virgin coconut oil, covered with a plastic cap and left it in overnight.
  2. Tea Rinse- using 2 Bamboo tea bags steeped in 2 cups of water + 2 tbsp of glycerin.
  3. Air Dry- with Extra Virgin Coconut Oil applied to wet hair then wrapped in a satin scarf.
  4. Leave ins- I used Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner to moisturize, my kitchenista Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter to seal and then faux banded my hair.

Results:
It took me less than 45 minutes to tangle! Now, this may not seem like a big deal to you---but this is AMAZEBALLS for me. I'm totally crushing on everything about Matrix's Hydrasource conditioner. It's not often that I fall head over heels in love with a conditioner after two uses. The slip is to die for. The scent is heavenly. And the moisture---y'all---I've never experienced moisture overload before, but this conditioner just might do it! This week, I decided to throw a strengthening conditioner on my ends. I've been protein layering for several months now; it's safe to say that my ends are in great shape because of it.

I wish that I would have taken a picture of my detangled and banded hair. I love the look of big hair on me! To style, I set my hair on a few Caruso steam rollers for about 30 minutes and went on about my day. I promise that I'm not abandoning bantu knots---I think!

5 Reasons Why Outdoor Workouts Rock | Fitness Friday

I love my gym. It's not pretentious. The people are friendly. The instructors are fierce. But real talk, my favorite workouts are in places without walls or weights; places were I can feel the wind in my hair and the sun on my face. I simply adore getting outside. Plus I love summer! *in my Olaf voice* (If you don't know by now, I'm a HUGE fan of Frozen) If you're struggling to get out of your air conditioned inside routine, here are 5 reasons to move your workout outdoors today!

Better overall health:
People who spend more time outdoors are more active on average than people who spend less time outside. Hills uneven terrain and wind resistance challenges your muscles and your mind.

Mood Enhancement:
Research consistency shows (like here, here and here) that outdoor exposure improves mood and protects against depression. In fact, the biggest increase in mood and self-essteem occurs in the first 5 minutes of being outside.

Vitamin D:
Ultraviolet rays from the sun cause the body to produce Vitamin D, a substance that is hard to get from food sources alone. Experts say 5 to 30 minutes of sunshine two to three times a week should be enough for most people.

Renewed Focus:
The relaxed quiet of outdoor enviroments allow our brains to recharge. There are no TO DO sticky notes on trees, it's extremely difficult to walk straight if you are texting, and your email inbox isn't screaming at you. Research at the Uni of Michigan shows that being outdoors increases your ability to focus attention once your return to work-technicals details and even improves memory

Crazy High Energy:
I haven't had 8 hours of sleep in at least 5 years. (A side effect of having young children---smh!) But no matter what time I go to sleep at night, when I start my day with an outdoor walk or run, I feel super energized and totally ready to attack my busy day.

http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/UFatVn1hP3o/maxresdefault.jpg
I love summmmmerrrrrr! (Sorry...I had to!)
How to get the most from working out outdoors:
Regardless of how fast you run or walk, what you wear, or how far you go. Just make sure to enjoy your time outdoors with all your senses. Breathe deeply. Listen to the birds singing.. Look for shapes in the clouds. Smell the sweet earthiness extruding from the cluster of trees along side the park. Feel the ground under your feet and the wind in your hair. The outdoors is calling!

What are your favorite outdoor workout?

Curly vs Straight

Bantu Knots on Flat ironed hair vs. stretched and air dried hair
I'm not comfortable in my straight hair anymore. I felt like I was wearing a wig. When I looked in the mirror---I didn't see me. I went to visit my family last week when someone literally grabbed a handful of my hair and said "This is the type of hair style that I like to see. Not that other bun thing that you had the other day." I replied---probably with a MAJOR 'tude---"Well take a picture, because I'm not doing my hair like this every week. Ain't nobody got time for that." I immediately walked away but heard her laugh and say, "Our hair ain't that good, you can't wear it like that."

Yes.

This is a true story.

No.

I couldn't make this up.

High Bun on flat ironed hair vs stretched and air dried hair
I'm a rainbow chasing, pixie dust sprinkling, glass pretty full kinda chica. I'm usually in my zone giggling at my own jokes. I truly believe that I'm the funniest person that I know. Ha-ha! Not a lot irks me nor am I easily offended. But this backhanded compliment stuck to me and I'm still mad almost a week later.

I don't believe that she was trying to be hurtful and I don't believe that her intent was to be mean-spirited or ignorant. But she was completely out of line and absolutely disrespectful.

Have your opinion. Share your perspective. But please, please, do not disrespect me or my choices. There is no "our hair" boo. There is your hair. There is my hair. Your hair might not be "that good" and that's your opinion. You might not want to "wear it like that" and that's your prerogative. However, my hair IS "that good" AND I will wear it however I feel like it.

Eventually this will be a distant memory. I won't care anymore. I won't be in my feelings. Yet still, it's comments like this that make me cringe. I believe in inclusion. I believe that we all have more in common than we think. I believe in encouragement. I love celebrating my hair and your hair too. Most importantly, I pray that women of all hair types and textures feel welcome at SavingOurStrands. And I sincerely hope that no one ever feels the way that I did that day when I got back handed by my straight hair.

How do you handle your hair haters?

Besitos!

[Hairstyle] Ballerina Top Knot| The #WashDayExperience

I've never been more excited to wash my hair, as I was this wash day! I missed my fullness, I missed the fluffiness, and I really missed my curls. Someone call the cops because I think that I've been abducted by aliens! I totally love my big hair more than poker straight hair! Here's how I got back to normal:

  1. Extreme Deep Condition- I deep conditioned on dry using Matrix Ultra Hydrasource Conditioner. Then I massaged my stands with extra virgin coconut oil, covered with a plastic cap and left it in overnight.
  2. Tea Rinse- using 2 Bamboo tea bags steeped in 2 cups of water + 2 tbsp of glycerin.
  3. Air Dry- with Chi Silk Infusion applied to wet hair then wrapped in a satin scarf.
  4. Leave ins- I used Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner to moisturize, my kitchenista Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter to seal and then set my hair in bantu knots.
Results:
First, let's give a round of applause for Ulta's Liter sale! I treated myself to a couple new things, including a giant bottle of Matrix Ultra Hydrasource Conditioner. I figured that it would work just as well as my beloved Matrix Biolage Ultra-Hydrating Balm, but boy was I wrong. It was 200% BETTER. Yeah, I didn't think that was possible either! Upon application, my hair was so soft and fluffy, I really didn't know if I needed to leave it in overnight. Washing it out was like rinsing butter from my hair. It's love at first use! I went for a simple high bun this week because between workouts, chasing kids, and putting the finishing touches on a family reunion this weekend---I really don't have time to fuss with my hair.

How was your wash day?

Length Check & One Year Post Relaxer

My ultimate goal has always been to reach MBL with blunt ends. After 3 years of slowly but surely cutting off my ridiculously over-processed thin ends, a shedding fiasco, and the worse relaxer experience of my life---I think that I finally made it!

My bangs are finally the same length as my hemline; something that I've lusted after forever. It's safe to say that protein layering is working, that my hair loves whipped butter, and that my hair is thriving without frequent direct heat

One Year Post Relaxer Feels Like...
Accomplishing. I expected my ends to be a hot mess. I expected breakage galore. I even gave myself a pre-flat iron pep talk. I reminded myself that my ends might not be able to withstand 52 weeks of detangling several textures. I didn't want to be disappointed if my hemline was a crooked mess.

Liberating. The freedom of not having length goals is exhilarating. I love my air dried hair---especially when my hair is set in bantu knots. The bigger and fluffier my hair the better. I'm in the celebration zone with my hair. I'm actually having fun with my hair on a regular basis.

Frightening. I'm claiming MBL. I'm claiming healthy ends. I'm claiming my reaching my goals. So...hmm...what do I do now? I have no desire to relax my hair at all. I really don't want to chop my relaxed ends off....today. For the first time in 3 years, I have no idea where this journey is going, but I like it. I like it a lot.

While I figure out where this journey is going, I've promised myself to have a great time on the ride. Where is your healthy hair journey going? What are your goals?

Besitos!

How To Protect Your Blowout At The Gym | Fitness Friday

I used to be that girl that avoided any strenuous sweat inducing activity to save my blowout or freshly flat ironed hair. Not anymore. When I don't workout, I just don't feel like myself. My most recent straightening session took 3 hours to complete; trust and believe that I'm going to do all that can maintain it. Today on #FitnessFriday, I'm sharing how I protect my blowout at the gym:
  1. Absorb it: Protect your edges from frizzing up with a sweat absorbing head band. I use Scunci No Slip Grip bands.
  2. Ballerina Top Knot: Pull your hair into a high, smooth, and taut ballerina bun. I'm in love with Sarah Potempa's "The Wrap Up." This nifty contraption keeps my ends protected while making the cutest bun without a hair tie or bobby pins that can leave dent marks. The best part is that at the end of my sweat session, I have great curls!
  3. Hands off: Please do not be that girl who is constantly fiddling with her hair! Ugh...not only is it annoying to the person behind you, but your sweaty hands will frizz your hair.
  4. The Switch: At the end of your workout, switch your head band for a dry one then cover with a satin scarf until your roots are dry. The tension of your bun and scarf should keep your roots flattened and prevent reversion. I have a collection of Lush Knot Wraps in my gym bag are are equal parts fashion, fun, and function.
How to you protect your straightened hair at the gym?
