Best of 2013: My Hair's Hits and Misses

Alas, I can't say adios to 2013 without recapping the best things (and the worse things) that happened to my hair. This year was full of new techniques, tips, and products so let's get started!

Hit: The Bun Effect
There is nothing boring about these buns honey! I protective style not just for my hair, but for ease and comfort. I have two little ones under 4, a demanding work schedule, a very busy super hero hubby, and I love working out. That leaves not so much time as I'd like to style my hair. Which makes me so thankful for the styles that I learned during The Bun Effect. Last May, I featured a different updo each day. May of which have made my weekly rotation!

Hit: Jessicurl Too Shea!
My goal this year was to find a fabulous creamy leave-in to keep my thristy hair hydrated. Jessicurl inched forward and out smarted the competitors in the Battle of the Leave Ins in absorption and nourishment while not falling to the bottom of the pack in price per use or hydration. It's multi-facteted; allowing me to use it as a co-wash, deep conditioner, and daily moisturizer. Although I didn't care for the (not so sweet) Island Fantasy scent, they have two other options to choose from. It works the best with my hair butter, and provides some of the best detangling slip around. While I'm totally smitten with Karen's Body Beautiful Hair Nectar, it's price per use was the highest. If Jessicurl ever fails me, this gem will be waiting in the wing.

Hit: Bantu Knots
When lurking around SavingOurStrands, you can't miss seeing shots of bantu knots. They are my thing. I used to be all about sleek straight gone with the wind fabulous hair, but this year I've been all about big bad curls. I've learned how to make them last for 4-5 days without having to manipulate my hair again. Plus, they stretch by 25 weeks post roots, blend all the textures in my hair, and force me to keep my hair moisturized to keep those defined curls looking beautiful. Bantu knots aren't the easiest curly set to master, but I promise you that once you get it---you'll love them too!

Hit: Tea Rinses
I can not say enough about tea rinsing. I. LOVE. IT. I talk about shedding. A Lot. A Whole Lot. I suffered a huge setback last spring (you can read about it here) and although it was a over year ago, the balls of hair that used to clog my shower drain still linger on fresh in my memory. This year, I made it my business to find products and implement techniques that could at least minimize my shedding and *fingers-crossed* prevent it. I can definitely say that tea rinsing is one of the reasons, I have very little shedding. Today, I mix it up a bit by adding Aloe Vera Juice and rosemary to my rinses. It's the bee's knees y'all!

Miss: Weekly Shampooing

I try to love shampoo. I really do. I've only found one shampoo that I think is decent (Matrix Biolage Hydratherapie Hydrating Shampoo). My hair just behaves better when I skip shampoos more often than not. For the days that I do need to get rid of the gunk on my scalp, I've turned to Curlicious Curls Cleansing Cream. It's non-stripping and non-tangling, but I utterly refuse to buy another shampoo until I've used up the 4-5 full bottles of shampoo sitting in my stash. Enter my DIY Co-Cleanser tip: 1 part shampoo + 2 parts oil + 3 parts conditioner = KLP's happy hair.

Miss: Braid-outs
Braidouts hate me. No seriously. I can't get a defined fluffy big braid out to save my life. I try. I fail. I try again. I fail again. However, the best part of a busted braid out is the way that it gives an updo life, honey! Y'all have met my Old Faithful 30 Second Style many many times. I've sported this style on straightened hair, air dried hair, bantu curled hair, and now {busted} braid out hair. I've done it so many times that I can do it without a mirror, one bobby pin, and in 30 seconds with a baby on my hip. Sometimes, I add a braided bang. Occasionally, I do a deep side part. Whilst, other times, I throw in a great hair accessory. I'm just going to stick to what I do best: bantu knots.

What were your hair's hits and misses this year? Link up your compilation below! Prospero Año y felicidad!

Best of 2013: Sunday Healthy Hairology Medley

Sunday Healthy Hairology Medley is the place where I share my favorite healthy hair related blogs, vlogs, and forum features. But this Sunday is a little different. Its time to say goodbye to 2013, so I thought that I would spotlight the best of HHM from this year:
Britt @ One&20
HOTD: flat twist-out one&20: The definition in Britt's flat twist-out is to die for. Avocado butter? Yep. That's on my wish list.

Simple Fixes for Dry New Growth relaxedthairapy: Dry, crunchy, tightly coiled roots are no joke. Not keeping your roots moisturized is a sure fire way to prevent retention and aid breakage. The two mortal enemies of stretchers. Read Miss Divachyk's 8 tips and tricks to fix dry roots.

Happy Endings: Can this process help stop your ends from breaking? RelaxedHairHealth: Nadege explores the idea of layering the strength of your protein conditioner as a way to reinforce weak ends. I love a good hair experiment!

Texturizers 101 tressedforSuccess: I used Just For Me Texture Softener for years and years. But stopped for the exact reasons that MJ did: their marketing. The packaging and branding that the gurus at Just For Me came up with is cute; but it's deceitful to naturals and I can't agree with marketing relaxers to kids. The ingredients are the same!
4 Tips For Minimizing Tangles When Shampooing JustGrowAlready: Shampooing sucks. Too much manipulation, causes too many tangles that can lead to too much breakage; especially in texlaxed hair. You can probably tell by the lack of wash days where I actually use a shampoo that I'm just not that big of a fan. Jeni shares 4 awesome tips to keep shampooing from being so annoying.
Detangling Impossible dailycurlz: Daily is my all time favorite brown skin latina curly superhero and if you've been shedding like crazy for the last few weeks---relax. You're not the only one and it doesn't matter if you're relaxed, natural or somewhere in between. Read up on Daily's take on seasonal shedding and how you can deal.
An Inch for Your Thoughts #16: “Do you ever get tired of doing that?” hairthereeverywhere: Most days, the only me time that I get is "hair-time," so I try to enjoy every moment of it. Do I think that I'll ever get tired of doing my hair? Probably not---9/10 times---I'm totally looking forward to wash days. I love that my hair gets a clean start, I love my hair's versatility, and I love that its allll mine. Yep. ALL MINE! Ellerlashanda relates relaxer day length checks to Christmas---and I totally agree!

Wash Day

You'd think that 25 week post hair would be a nightmare, but it hasn't. I'm not sure what I'm doing right, but I don't intend on changing much of anything until it stops working.
  1. Detangled- with my fingers and a very generous slathering of extra virgin coconut oil.
  2. Pre-Poo- with JBCO on my scalp.
  3. Cleansing Cream (Shampoo)- I applied Curlicious Curls Cleansing Cream with an applicator bottle and let it sit for 3-4 minutes then rinsed.
  4. Extreme Deep Condition- with Matrix Biolage Ultra-Hydrating Balm on my roots, Macadamia Oil Deep Repair Masque on my ends, then massaged extra virgin coconut oil into my strands from root to tip. I covered with a plastic cap, relaxed under my heat cap for about 3 hours.
  5. Rosemary Green Aloe Hair Rinse- After rinsing the conditioner, I applied 1 part steeped green tea + 1 part aloe vera juice + 2 springs of rosemary, using a narrow tip applicator to my strands--focusing on the roots. I let it sit for a few minutes then rinsed.
  6. Smoothing Treatment- with a large dollop of Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution.
  7. Air Dried- to 80-85% wrapped in a cotton t-shirt.
  8. Leave-Ins- I used Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner and Organix Coconut Milk Anti-Breakage Serum to detangle, then tension blow dried by roots on cool to smooth then faux banded and stretch my roots.
Results:

I love the sleek results that I get from tension blow drying my roots. Its not direct heat, because I use my blower on the cool setting. Plus, my hair feels a little easier to manage and the Organix Coconut Milk Anti-Breakage Serum definitely makes my hair smoother. To style, I divided by hair in half, then threw in a few twists. I pinned them up into a halo/milkmaid style and went about my way. Super easy and super simple. I'll probably wear this style into the new year!

How was your last wash day?

Besitos?

  2. Start your flat twist, dutch braid, or two strand twist at your ear.
  3. Braid along the perimeter of your head until you get back around to your starting point.
  4. Tuck the ends behind the original braid with a bobby pin.

Tips & Tricks
  1. Need Staying Power? Use as many pins has you have to get get the shape that you want. Just be sure to hide them well.
  2. Can't braid? I did a giant flat twist instead of the double strand twist in the tutorial. It was just easier for me.

  4. Frizzy Edges? Pick up some gel or wax and apply a bit to slick your edges down. Then cover with a scarf for 5-10 minutes.

How To Fight Itchy And Flaky Winter Scalp

There are a zillion things to be loved about the winter: layering, tall boots, and hot cocoa are a few of my favorite things. But the dry, cold winter air and temps are no joke.  All of which can take a toll on your hair causing that pat yo weave *in my best Bey voice* dry, itchy, flaky scalp. Defend your hair with my 3 favorite scalp soothers:

Rosemary Green Aloe Hair Rinse

Homemade for the hairlista who knows her way around the kitchen

Ingredients:
2 bags green tea steeped in 1 cup of water, 1 cup aloe vera juice, 2 springs rosemary, and a little pixie dust.

Why it works:
Rosemary acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory to soothe itchiness. Green tea is an astringent packed with caffeine known to help increase oxygen to your hair follicles. Aloe vera juice is very subtle, absorbs easily, leaves no residue, almost odorless, naturally combats frizz, soothes the itches, all while moisturizing hair with vital nutrients.

How I use it:
Tea Rinse: After deep conditioning as a final rinse.
Deep Condition: Sprtiz a little on your scalp and hair before applying your deep conditioner.

(Simple) Stimulating Essential Oil Blend

Semi-homemade for the hair obsessed chica who ain't got time for all that measuring

Ingredients:
Peppermint Essential Oil, Eucalyptus Essential Oil, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Why it works:
Peppermint invigorates and refreshes your scalp. Eucalyptus is antimicrobial, revitalizing, and clarifying. Extra Virgin Coconut oil soothes and protects. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is an light weight moisturizing emollient (and it's super cheap!)

How I use it:
Pre-poo: Applied to my scalp in a spray bottle.
Scalp massage: For a few minutes a few times a week.

Philip Kingsley Flaky Itchy Scalp Toner

Store Bought for the healthy hair connoisseur who loathes anything DIY

Ingredients:
Aqua (Water), Alchohol Denat, Benzalkonium Chloride, Camphor, Piroctone Olamine.

Why It works:
Camphor cools as it soothes. Benzalkonium Chloride helps to prevent recurrence of flaking.
Piroctone Olamine provides long lasting relief from the itchies.
Your scalp is the key to healthy hair. And the good news is all all 3 treatments help reduce shedding! Two birds one stone!

What are you doing to keep your scalp healthy this winter?

Weekly Wishes

If you're new to Weekly Wishes, its just a place where I talk about my goals or how I want to conquer my world this week. It gives me an place to reflect on the days that have passed and plan for the days ahead without getting stuck in the fact that Monday's aren't my favorite day by any means. You can join me by making your wish for the week and linking up with Melyssa @ The Nectar Collective.

LAST WEEK'S WISH:
Mission find fun in Chaotic Christmas was totally accomplished. My family and I participated in our church's Christmas play. This year, we decided to tell the story of Jesus' birth from the barn animals' perspective. I played a chicken, my minions played camels, and my hubby was a wise man. We had a blast and we were uber excited because of some of our extended family traveled up the east coast to our acting debut! My daughter had been practicing her line since October and she did a marvelous job!

THIS WEEK'S WISH:
My semi-laser focus last week give me an opportunity for an in house movie date night with my hubby and time to hang with my relatives without having to worry about catching up on real work. This week, I don't want to be preoccupied with checking email, returning client calls or getting ahead with my reports. The down side of working from home---is just that---I have the ability to work anytime that I want. And a lot of times, that means that I keep non-traditional work hours. I just want to be present whilst opening presents.

What's your wish this week? Big it big or small--speak it into existence!

Hot Holiday Hair (Week 3)

One&20 and SavingOurStrands Presents: Hot Holiday Hair (Week 3)

Ready to bring the SavingOurStrands Braids & Buns Pinterest board to life? Here's week 1's challenge: thebeautydepartment's Summer Winter Lovin'. Britt over at One&20 is covering how to's, tips, and tricks for the curly natural chicas and yours truly (ME!) is representing for the relaxed&radiant tresses. I know that you have super chic looks too! Share your own hot holiday hair posts in our weekly link up below. We've even got this nifty badge for you to use and don't forget to visit with the other hairlistas in the link up.

Summer Winter Lovin'

  1. Moisturize, seal and detangle hair. (I started on previously bantu knotted tension/air dried hair.)
  2. Create side part and section hair from ear to ear.(Optional: Leave a small section out to fame your face.)
  3. Loosely braid the back half and secure with a bobby pin. Pick apart and fluff your braid creating an illusion of plumped fullness.
  4. Divide front sections into two, twist each section, pull back, and wind around braid at your nape.
  5. Fashion ends into a loose, messy, chignon and secure with pins.

Tips & Tricks

  1. Skimpy bun? I opted for a chignon in this style because I wanted it to look fuller without having to use a mesh donut. There's totally a difference between a bun and chignon.
  2. Volume lacking? Try bantu knotting your tresses without holding product for about 2 hours before styling.
  3. Braid trouble? It doesn't matter if you dutch braid, fishtail, or two strand twist. Whatever braid is easiest for you to do---go for it!
  4. No shine?  Try applying an oil or butter before styling. I use my kitchenista Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter.
  5. thebeautydepartment.com
  6. Flyaways? Tame flyways by covering with a silk scarf for a few minutes before heading out. I totally wish that I would have done that!
It was really hard for me to get that center braid right, but once I did, the rest was a piece of cake! What updo did you try this week? Link it up for us to see below!

Wash Day {KLP}

6 months post relaxer? Say what? I'm not sure if I should be mad at myself for rebelling against my goal of NOT stretching beyond 20 weeks or if I should rejoice for a relatively #strugglefree stretch. I have no desire to (read: I'm swamped with real work) relax before we say adios to 2013, so I guess that its quite possible that I'll see 7 months+ post relaxer soon. I can't remember if I've ever stretched this long intentionally since I started my healthy hair journey and I'm wishing everyday that I don't regret it. Eek! Here's how my last wash day went:

  1. Detangled- with my fingers and a very generous slathering of extra virgin coconut oil.
  2. Pre-Poo- with Philip Kingsley Flaky Itchy Scalp Toner followed by JBCO on my scalp. I caught up on some cleaning around the house for a few hours.
  3. Cleansing Cream (Shampoo)- I applied a generous amount of my DIY Co-cleansing cream to my tresses concentrating on the roots. I let it sit for 3-4 minutes then rinsed.
  4. Extreme Deep Condition- with Matrix Biolage Ultra-Hydrating Balm to my strands (root to tip), then massaged my strands in extra virgin coconut oil. I covered with a plastic cap, relaxed under my heat cap for about 2 hours, then left it in overnight.
  5. Aloe Black Tea Rinse- After rinsing the conditioner, I applied 1 part steeped black tea + 1 part aloe vera juice, using a narrow tip applicator to my strands--focusing on the roots. I let it sit for a few minutes then rinsed.
  6. Smoothing Treatment- with a large dollop of Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution.
  7. Air Dried- to 80-85% wrapped in a cotton t-shirt.
  8. Leave-Ins- Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner and Chi Silk Infusion
Results:
Hello cleaning cream! Clean hair? Check. Not stripped? Check. Minimum tangles? Check. Have I found a way to use up all of my sub par bottles of shampoo? You betcha! This technique is here to stay. Whilst, I hate having to jump in and out of the shower, if my hair will benefit, then I could think of worst sacrifices to make.

Today's wash was a reminder of why oh why I love Matrix Ultra Hydrating Balm. My hair was so fluffy and moisturized. I feel like they made this one just for me and my 6 month post uber curly roots. Because my hair felt so soft, I opted for a black tea rinse and Chi Silk Infusion as a little protein breakage protection. I hear that over-moisturizing is real. Kinda like unicorns and leprechauns. I haven't seen it yet but I'm definitely not trying to either. Ha-ha! I faux banded my hair to stretch my roots. I'm back in the gym training for my next 5k so fluffy air dried buns are back!

Have you ever experienced over-moisturized hair?

Besitos!

Why I'll Never Only Use Black (or Latina) Owned Products For My Hair

My family gatherings look like a United Nations conference. With cousins, aunts, and uncles with roots in five out of the 7 continents represented. I have brown eyes, my hubby has hazel eyes, my niece has blue eyes. My suegra has 2a hair, my grandmother has 3b hair, my mother has 4a hair. My aunt is relaxed, my cousin is natural, my sister-in-law is transitioning. The only thing that we all have in common is our love of God, family, and sports; always in that order.
En route to take our family pictures

Diversity spills over into all facets of my life; from the way that I talk (in spanglish), to the food that I eat (kale, Spanish rice, and beans), and and even what products I use on my hair. Take a look at my regimen. I swear by Philip Kingsley Flaky Itchy Scalp Toner delightfully made in the UK. If I was on a desert island I'd take an unlocked sun powered cell phone to call for help and a lifetime supply of Halka Baba de Caracol made with love in Santo Domingo. My all time favorite multipurpose product is Jessicurl Too Shea! Extra Moisturizing Conditioner made by a redhead in California. I've faithfully used black AND female owned Carol's Daughter Hair Milk Shampoo for my son since he was born. I have no issues with bloggers who only promote black businesses. I have no issues with bloggers who don't. In fact, if you like it, then I love it. I'm team do you boo! Spend your hard earned dollar exactly how to want to. After all, your dollar is your voice. But I'll never have a predominately black, white, latina, blue, green, or blue owned hair regimen. It's not me. It's not a reflection of my worldview. Plus, variety is the spice of life. And there is no shame in that.

What's your take?
