[Hairstyle] Bantu Knot High Bun | The #WashDayExperience

Have you ever tried one product from a line, absolutely loved it and wanted to invest in the entire line? Yeah---that's totally this chica. Except, sometimes it can come to bite you in the butt! I've raved about Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie a thousands times. I've even talked how much I like the co-washing cleanser from the same line. So, I figured, heeeyyyy the rest of the line must be good. But oh boy, was I wrong. Here's why you should only try one new product at a time:

  1. Extreme Deep Condition- I gently detangled my hair then applied Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Conditioner to my unwashed hair. Then I massaged my strands with extra virgin coconut oil, covered with a plastic cap and let marinate under my heat cap for about 3 hours.
  2. Oil Rinse- using a bit more Extra Virgin Coconut oil
  3. Air Dry- wrapped in a satin scarf.
  4. Leave ins- I used Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Style Milk to moisturize, my kitchenista Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter to seal and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie for hold then bantu knotted my hair in about 12 sections.

The Results:
Meh...not at all what I expected. First I'll chat about the product. The Coconut & Hibiscus line smells fabulousicious. I'd buy the perfume and bathe in it for several days at a time. It's just that good. But this conditioner and leave in? No. No. No. and NO. On application in both instances, I thought, ohh this is nice it's absorbing quickly. has decent slip, I think that my hair will like this. But there was no softness. No silkiness. No moisture. When I rinsed the conditioner or when I took the knots down to fluff the curls. Didn't feel moisturized at all. I'm willing to give it one more try...but probably not anytime soon.

Bantu Knot fail #5719: The moment when all your curls look great except that one on the right side that didn't curl up all the way making your head look lopsided. no matter what you do or how you fluff the rest of your curls, you still look like a chia pet? Yeah---that was totally this chica.

I need to re-read my ABCs of Banging Bantu Knots because every single set that I've attempted this summer has been a fail. The curls are too tight. I use products that don't play well together. Or I don't use a holding product and then my curls don't last. I really need to get my bantu knot life right y'all!

Into a high bun with curly bangs it all went. I've officially made it an unofficial protective styling kinda summer.

      1. The only item that I could give two thumbs up is the Curl Enhancing smoothie. I'd give the Co-Washing Conditioner 1 1/2 thumbs up but the rest of the line----meh...

        LOL.

You should be able to add your link now!

    5. I've only tried the Curl Enhancing Smoothie and it took me a while to love it, well I had to learn how to use it first lol. You are a brave one, over a year post relaxer and your trying out new products?!? After I hit 7 weeks post I only stick to the products that I know work well. But your hair came out fabulous as always, we would have never known that it was lacking in the moisture department :)

      1. I struggled with the Curl Enhancing Smoothie in the beginning too. Which I'm willing to give the line another try...but not anytime soon! LOL!

My hair looked 100% better than it felt! Obviously I'm addicted to the Matrix Hydrasource line!

      1. If it wasn't for that one dang curl-that-didn't-curl I would have straight! LOL.

It actually worked in my flavor because I didn't have to fiddle with my hair at all during my anniversary celebration weekend. +1 for me!

    7. What! *empties her shea moisture filled basket*...hmmm this is not the first time I have heard about the hit or miss of products in this line. Give it another try, after you recover :) Your hair still look great though, high bun worked!

      1. The worst part: I don't have a CLUE why my hair didn't like them! It was so weird.

        Thanks for stopping by chica!

    8. Absolutely gorgeous bantu knot out as usual! I really loved the Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk but it was far too expensive for the amount of product you get. I've not tried any other Shea Moisture products. What a shame about them being hit and miss for you! x

      1. I picked up the Style Milk after reading your review! I've used it a few times to moisturize on dry hair and I'm just not all that impressed. *Shrugs*

I wish that I didn't have to pay a small fortune in shipping otherwise it would be coming across the pond to you chica!

    9. This line is alil pricey so that's why haven't tried it yet. High bun always saves the day. Pretty curls regardless

      1. I picked them up during a BOGO free sale at either Walgreens or Sallys. So I'm not too upset. Plus, my little cousin loves this stuff so she'll be excited to have a few more bottles! #payitforward...kinda. LOL!

    10. I wanted to love Curl Enhancing Smoothie, but it just didn't work for me. Same with the reconstructive conditioner. It's okay, but I won't buy it again once it's gone. I have also been rocking a high bun all summer. (And most of last winter and fall too if I'm telling the truth!!) I love your look though!!

      1. I adore the Curl Enhancing Smoothie. It's what gives my curls all of it's holding power and definition. But those other two: The Style Milk and Curl & Shine Conditioner---that stuff is for the birds!

I figure that there are worse ways to rock my hair than a high bun right? LOL. It maybe boring but at least its super cute!

    11. Who woulda known with that high bun and the cute bangs??
So sorry you didn't like the new products you got from the line. I keep seeing mixed reviews so I'm hesitant to try.

    12. I'm all late to the party but I'm here. I kept things to a minimum this week.

    13. The results are still cute! I don't have a great track record with Shea Moisture (and I reeealllly wanted to love them) so I'm hesitant to try anything else by them.

      1. There is only one product that I adore from Shea Moisture---the Curl Enhancing Smoothie. It's amazing at making my bantu knot curls defined. The Co-Cleanser is decent. I'm on the fence about the other lines. At least EVERYTHING smells fantastic!
