Healthy Hair Insight: Rise and Shine with Great Healthy Hair

Healthy Hair Insight

As an uber busy mom of too little ones, sometimes I just don't have the time (or energy) to treat my hair with the time and attention it deserves. So, I have to resort to desperate measures. Here are 6 ways that I care for my hair while I some beauty sleep!

  1. Pineapple- sleeping with straightened or curls up in a loose pony (tuck straightened hair into a big bun to create beach waves) to reduce tangles and preserves curls. I forgo a hair tie and simply clip ends with bobby pin or my new fave Colortrak Safari Croc Clips to prevent those annoying wrinkles that appear when I use regular hair clips.
  2. Overnight deep condition- add just a little Matrix Biolage Hydratherapie Conditioning Balm to hair before bed. Bun and cover with a plastic cap then satin scarf. Rinse in the am for super moisturized tresses.
  3. Infuse Moisture with a humidifier- back into hair that processing has made porous and dry by spritzing a little It's a 10 Miracle Leave-In overnight plus running a humidifier for a light overnight steam session
  4. Satins got your back- Satin and silk create less friction and smooth out cuticles while smoothing to counter frizziness. Sleep on a satin pillowcase.
  5. Roll with it- moisturize strands lighting and roll large sections around flexi rods for a lush bouncing texture perfect down up pulled up in your fave updo.
  6. Wicked Waves- double strand twist 2" sections all over then secure with satin rollers. Sleep tight and wake with tousled waves.
How do you save time and energy in your hair regimen?

Pool Co-Wash

Pool Co-washing rocks!

I've never really been a fan of frequent co-washing, but there is just no way that I wouldn't wash my hair after going to the pool. The thought simply screams breakage in my mind. So, here's how I've been co-washing and taming my 13 (I think) post hair after kicking it at the pool:

  1. Protect: I start by detangling my un-washed hair then moisturizing with Herbal Essences Hello Hydration and sealing with coconut oil. I apply a few hours before going to the pool and pull back into a low bun or french braid.
  2. Pre-poo: When I return from the pool, I let down my hair to dry a bit. I find it so much easier to detangle partly dry hair vs. soaking wet hair. Next, I gently and very carefully detangle in small sections using my Magic Star Jumbo Rake, adding more coconut oil to my roots as I work.
  3. Shampoo: Next, I hop in the shower, rinse, then apply diluted Matrix Biolage Hydratherapie Hydrating Shampoo using a narrow tip applicator bottle.(Don't forget to enter the Matrix Bun Effect Giveaway so that you can win your very own bottle!)
  4. Leave-ins: After lightly t-shirt drying my hair. I massaged a big dallop of Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisture Conditioner in sections then applied a little Chi Silk Infusion to "seal." I pull my hair back and then cover with my scarf to coax my roots into laying down. I air dry then pull into a bun or install bantu knots.
Because I don't disturb my roots while I'm washing, it stays tangle free. Plus our vacation home has the most amazing water pressure! I have co-washed every time that I went to the pool (4 days so far). Which has kept my roots moisturized, my scalp clean, and rid my hair of dryness from the chlorinated pool water. Sadly, I'll be saying adios to Florida in a few days. My next wash day I'll be doing a protein treatment in preparation for my relaxer next week. Finger's crossed for a smooth, woe-free relaxer day!

Enjoy your weekend lovelys!

Vacation Wash Day

With my sister-in-law in Florida
Hola Loves!

It's holiday vacation time! I've spent the last week or so shopping, relaxing, and kicking it with family. It really can't get any better than this! I've co-washed every three days, air drying then setting my hair with Bantu Knots. However, after a day at the pool and a few sweat drenching runs in 90+ degree weather, it was beyond time to give my tresses a good wash.
  1. Detangled in the same sections that my hair was knotted in. Then added a little coconut oil to aid in detangling and moisturizing.
  2. Shampoo- with my favorite clarifying product KeraCare 1st Lather Shampoo to clarify first and then Matrix Biolage Hydratherapie Hydrating Shampoo to give my back some moisture. Don't forget to enter the Matrix Giveaway so that you can win your very own bottle!
  3. Extreme deep condition with Halka Baba de Caracol and a bit more coconut oil massaged into my hair. I really concentrated on my roots and ends. I covered with a plastic cap and relaxed under my heating cap for about an hour.
  4. Air dried for about 30 minutes then speed detangled using It's a 10 Miracle Leave in.
I pulled my hair up into a high bun then bantu knotted my bangs for soft curls. This wash I skipped my tea rinse and I hope it wasn't a mistake. But I totally forgot my smoothing conditioner and I didn't want to deal with hard or brittle hair. My hair has been on its very best behavior especially considering that I'm 3 months post.

Hope you guys are having a great start to the summer!

[Review] Matrix Biolage Hydratherapie Hydrating Shampoo

Price: $14.25 for 16.9oz
Purchased at: Amazon.com
Promises: Gently cleanses and moisturizes very dry, thick, coarse hair. Formulated with nurturing silk amino acids to help smooth and control unwanted volume, resulting in intesely soft, rich and sumptuous hair.
Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Cocamide MEA, Hexylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance, Benzyl Alcohol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Citric Acid, Glycol Distearate, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Tetrasodium EDTA, Polysorbate 20, Hexyl Cinnamal, Coumarin, Linalool, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Hydroxycitronellal, Amyl Cinnamal, Geraniol, Algae (Algae Extract), Pollen Extract, Saponaria Officinalis (Saponaria Officinalis Extract), Salvia Officinalis (Sage Leaf Extract), Cymbopogon Schoenanthus (Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract), Triticum Vulgare (Wheat Germ Oil), Yellow 5 (CI 19140)

Directions: Apply to wet hair massage gently and well.  Rinse well.

My Thoughts:
This is my all time favorite shampoo! It cleans my scalp whilst being very gentle and super moisturizing for my strands. I had religiously use KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo until my mother in law introduced me to this little gem earlier this year. I like it better than KeraCare because it just does a better job of cleansing my hair without stripping it. Plus the scent is better. It has the same light, fresh and clean scent that the Hydratherapie line is famous for. You don't have to use much to get a good lather, so the bottle lasts for months. It's paraben free but not sulfate free. If you're avoiding sulfates you'll want to avoid this one.

Wash Day

Now that I've got my vacay hair style mastered---I'm so totally ready to be in the Florida sun! I've been working on the perfect Bantu knot cocktail for my hair. So far, the winner is Jessicurl's Too Shea Conditioner, a dab of grapeseed oil, plus a smidgen of Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. Precise amounts right? Ha-ha. The best part is that my hair stays moisturized and detangling was actually a breeze this wash day. Here are the dets:

Wash Day Products

(0) Detangled with my magic rake in the same sections that my hair was knotted. I applied a little of my essential oil blend to my roots to aid in detangling.

(1) Shampooed with KeraCare 1st Lather Shampoo to clarify first and then Matrix Biolage Hydratherapie Hydrating Shampoo to give my back some moisture. I do declare that I love this shampoo! May it never be discontinued! Don't forget to enter the Matrix Giveaway so that you can win your very own bottle!
(2) Protein Treatment: I saturated my hair in Nexxus Emergencee then did some chores. It air dried for a few hours. Next, I stood under the spray of my shower for about 5 minutes to rinse the treatment completely.
(3) Extreme deep condition with  a 3-1 ratio of Joico Moisture Recovery and Roux Porosity Control Conditioner on the length of my hair. I massaged a little grapeseed oil through my strands, covered with a plastic cap and sat under my heat cap for an hour. (4) Green Tea Rinse with 2 green tea bags and 2 cups of water. Then applied the green tea rinse with a narrow tip applicator bottle and let it sit for another 5 minutes.
(5) Smoothing treatment with Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Daily Treatment. I rinsed the tea and massage a dollop of conditioner to my strands.
(6) Air dried with a cotton t-shirt until my hair was about 80% dry.
(7) Leave Ins- Never underestimate the power of a great pre-wash detangle. I didn't even need both combs for the 2 comb method today to detangle. I added a little Jessicurl's Too Shea Conditioner and Grapeseed oil to each section. Then I pulled my hair into a loose bun and tied it up with a satin scarf to get my roots to lay down.
Results:
Wash Day Shed Hair
Smooth? Check. Detangled? Check. A girl could really get used to worry free wash days. I've even considered extending this stretch a few more weeks beyond my vacay if I can fend off long strand breakage. I'm reserving full wash days for the weeks when I need a protein treatment. Why? Because I'm spoiled. Only having to get into the shower once is too awesome to pass up! Of course if my scalp disagrees, I'll shampoo.

How was your wash day?

Healthy Hair Insight: Long...Hot..Summer Days

AHhhhhhhh Summer is upon us!! It can be a lovely thing but also a veryyy dreadful occasion lol if we get lost in translation and forget our hair. Personally, I am a summer camp director...soooo it gets very long and hot ...and add the swimming pool..my hair will fall out due to breakage if I do not stay on top of my "Hair Game". So here are a few tips for both you and I to remember! Many of these tips have been shared consistently, soooo that says something right!? :D

Summer "Hair Game" Tips

  1. Although tempting on a hot day, NO PONYTAILS! Summer time is the perfect time to be CREATIVE .. so style your hair in a cute bun/updo style. Check/Like our Facebook for some styles from KLP! We will be placing pics of all the 30 styles in 30 days to our page!
  2. DRINK WATER! Stay hydrated.. Remember water is great for you (no bueno if you pass out) and for your hair.
  3. Wash regularly and rotate moisture products into your regimen... My hair personally drys out sooo much quicker during the summer months...So, I must stay on my moisturizing and sealing regimen..and ensure that I am protecting my strands. Every season brings a new...reason.. lol basically know your hair during the changing seasons.
  4. Sunscreen ... lol..hey! Some people forget..but you still tan lol however, we should all protect our skin!
  5. NO HEAT #FTW? .. Summer time brings the temptation of flat irons, curling irons and everything with heat...try your best to limit your heat usage and when necessary (a hot date! maybe) make sure you are protecting your hair! I love using my chi silk infusion as a heat protectant and I also use a dab of Kiwi Coloreflector Blow Serum (Review shall come) or Redken Smooth Lock Heat Glide (recently started using this...review coming)
I am sure there are a TON more things we can all do for our hair, but I think if you REST (have positivity as KLP would recommend) and follow these simple steps! How hair might not be as stressful!? lol or at least mine is not!

How do you protect your hair against the heat/humidty!?

Good Luck in your Summeer Dayss!

Dear Bantu Knots, I love you. That's all.

Braid-out 2011
Big Bun 2012
My family vacays are always the best time of the year for me. When I say "family," I mean FAMILY. This year we have family members coming from as far as New York to Florida to celebrate my hubby's grandparent's anniversary. In our family, we don't need much of a rhyme or reason to celebrate. So this anniversary is a BIG deal. Fifty-plus years of marriage in this day, is a mega blessing. I always have a great great time, but I feel like I fight with my hair. A LOT. And it wins. Every.Time. The humidity is no joke. Straightening is just silly. My braid-outs are totally hit or miss---With more misses than hits. Last year, I resorted to big buns and updos. I really want a way to wear my hair out that's low maintenance but high style. This year, I'm thinking Bantu knots on stretched air dried hair might be my saving grace. *cue angelic music*

Three hours later
Freshly un-twisted
I did a test run today using a little Herbal Essences Touchably Smooth Split End Protector and Grapeseed oil. I sectioned my hair and then make little buns or Bantu knots. The knots only had a chance to set for about 2 hours before I had to get out of the house.

I was out and about in 95% humidity for about 4 hours. I could literally feel my curls dropping and my roots getting bigger. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating, only a little. Ha-ha!

Overall, I really like this look. It was super easy to do and its good to know that in 2 hours I can get a pretty nice low manipulation style. At night, I'll either pineapple or re-set in the same sections. I probably need another leave-in that can give my hair a little more hold and definition. Sugerencias?

My Thoughts:
Late October, my partner in crime, Keyda, asked me what she could do about her itchy scalp and shedding. I recalled an awesome blurb I read in November 2012's Glamour mag about Philip Kingsley's Flaky Itchy Scalp Toner. The key to healthy hair is definitely a healthy scalp. Philip Kingsley is one of the world’s leading Trichologists; a hair doctor. Like a dentist, but for your hair. He has an amazing line of products, but at the core is his belief in the importance of scalp health. A few days afterwards, she bought it and now uses it faithfully. After 2 months, she told me that her scalp feels amazing and her shedding is under control.

savingourstrands.blogspot.com
Glamour November 2012
I usually massage an essential oil blend every wash day into my scalp to simulate and prevent flakes, but I wondered---could PK's toner be my key to a shed free Spring? (I usually shed in the fall and spring) Instead of being reactive this year, I decided to be proactive and ordered a bottle for myself. My first use was awkward. The toner concoction is very watery, yet has a pleasant underwhelming scent. Its nozzle opening is entirely too large unless you want to soak your head with the product. Of course with water as the first ingredient, I knew that it would revert my new growth--so I applied to my scalp on dry hair about 8 hours before I washed. I'm going to use the product for a few weeks to decide how I like it and if it prevents another Spring Shed Situation.

Final Thoughts:
I applied the treatment at least once a week for almost 6 months. I ended up replacing the giant nozzle applicator with a fine mist spray top to prevent myself from wasting the product. No allergic reactions or adverse effects to report. I haven't had one incident of shedding like crazy, the way that I did last year and my shed hair on wash days has been smaller in diameter than a penny. Whilst, I can't say that PK's Toner is the only reason that I've avoided a shedding fiasco this Spring, I think that it has definitely helped. De-stressing, PK Toner, and green tea rinses #ftw! All four are in my regimen for the long haul.

This one is definitely a keeper! If you've tired it, let us know!

Mini Wash

Hola Chicas!

Good news: I have 2.5 inches of super rizada roots. Bad news: I have 2.5 inches of super rizada roots. Ha-ha! I'm still sticking to my decision to relax in a few weeks after my vacay, but I pray daily that I won't regret it. Instead of fighting with my hair, attempting to coax it into sleek and smooth styles, instead I'm going to work with what I have. I'm thinking that a flexi-rod, braid-out, and bantu knot set will be the way to go. I naturally have big hair and the Florida humidity is only going to make it bigger. Then, if worst comes to worst, I'll pull it up into a big ol bun! So, for the next few days, I think that I'll practice so that I can brush up on my technique. Any suggestions will be appreciated! On to my wash day:

Wash Day Products

(0) Detangled with my magic rake in vertical sections.
(1) Extreme deep condition with Philip Kingsley Flaky/Itchy Scalp Toner, my essential oil blend, and a little JBCO on my scalp. Plus a 3-1 ratio of Nexxus Hydralight Weightless Moisture Conditioner and Roux Porosity Control Conditioner on the length of my hair. I massaged a little EVCO through my strands, covered with a plastic cap and sat under my heat cap for an hour.
(2) Tea Rinse with 2 green tea bags steeped 2 cups of water. I rinsed the conditioner thoroughly. Applied the tea rinse with a narrow tip applicator bottle and then let it sit on my hair for 5 minutes while in the shower.
(3) Smoothing treatment with Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Daily Treatment. I rinsed the tea and massage a dollop of conditioner to my strands.

(4) Air dried with a cotton t-shirt until my hair was about 80% dry.  (5) Leave Ins- I detangled using the 2 comb method while adding a little Jessicurl's Too Shea Conditioner and Grapeseed oil to each section. Then I pulled my hair into a loose bun and tied it up with a satin scarf to get my roots to lay down.

Results:
Shed hair
A little more of the same ol same ol. Which at this point in my stretch---is a good thing. I did a good detangle the day before my wash which left me with just a few strands of shed hair in the shower. YAY! I'm glad that I gave Nexxus Hydralight Weightless Moisture Conditioner another try. I love the smell and the slip that it provided. I was actually shocked at how smooth and fluffy my hair felt after I rinsed. A girl could definitely get used to that feeling. Thanks Keyda--your review was on point! If I found it on sale (and I had a coupon again) I'd definitely repurchase to keep in rotation. My hair was fairly easy to detangle and Jessicurl Too Shea Conditioner gave my roots a nice boost of moisture.

How was your last wash day?

Bun, Top Knot, Chignon, & Rolls/Twists

Sounds like I'm talking about food right? Or maybe I'm just hungry. Ha-ha! Any who, I get asked a lot what are the differences between a bun, top knot, chignon, and roll. While all four are tend to be used interchangeably, I do think that there are subtle differences between them. Here's the low down on up-dos:

Bun: Your hair is pulled up away from your face, twisted or braided, and wrapped in a circle around itself. Can be on the back of the head or neck. Buns can be worn messy or pulled together depending on your mood.

Top Knot: A cute name for a bun positioned at the very top of your head.

Chignon: Typically a formal, low up-do where your hair is pulled back away from your face. Instead of coiling the hair around itself in a circular motion, chignons have your hair gathered together then tucked under to secure.

French Rolls/Twists: A very neat classic up-do traditionally sitting on the back of the head and twists up from the nape of the neck creating a vertical "roll"

What's your favorite: Buns, Top knots, Chignons, or French Rolls/Twists?

Healthy Hair Insight: Feeding Your Hair Positivity

Healthy Hair Insight: Think Positive

What's your hair woe of choice? Split ends? Over-processed stands? Knots and tangles? Well stop obsessing. Ahora. It does more harm than good. Stress is very very sneaky [cue Elmer Fudd impression]. When pressure and anxiety mount, your body takes a hit and so does your hair.
Many believe that stress hormones mess with hair follicles forcing them to skip through their growing phase right into a resting phase. Resting strands equal shedding, so, here are some tips on how to respond to stressful [hair] moments with poise:
  1. Practice Mindfulness- Recite the things the things that are working. Focus on the here and now. Take a few minutes (or hours if you need it) to practice mindful breathing through mediation. Don't worry about the future and don't replay the past over and over.
  2. Cultivate strength- What are you really good at? What energizes you? What tasks in your regimen are easy for you to do? Once you know, find a way to use those strengths to push you further in your hair care journey. You're hair cock-tailing master? Have you perfected flexi-rod sets? Focus on those strengths.
  3. Celebrate progress- You're your happiest you when you feel like your making progress toward meaningful goals. First, you have to clarify your goals (health vs. length), then ensure that you have the tools to achieve them. Notice the progress that you've made and how far from the start line you've come. You may not be at the length that you want but if you've retained any length at all, increased thickness, or simply learned to care for your hair so that it thrives instead of suffers, then you're #winning!
  4. Nurture relationships- Spend some time with those that minimize stress and will uplift you when you have doubts. This means---don't call your friend that thinks you're crazy for putting cooking oils in your head. There are tons of supportive hair friends blogging, YouTubing, and Instagraming their hearts out that will console you in anything hair related. Told the stylist that you wanted a trim but got a 4 inch cut? Look to a hair friend. Chances are that they've been there before and will remind you that "this too shall pass."
Setbacks are only setups for success. Banish that stress from your regimen. Learn. Be better. Feed yourself positivity. Move on.

Healthy Hair Insight: Where to place your part?

Healthy Hair Insight: How to part your hair

I'm not sure if you noticed, but I love a good side part. Its a twist on the traditional centre part actually opens up the face for more dramatic looks. Placement of your part is definitely a personal preference. I like to align my part with the highest point of the eyebrow using a chopstick. You can totally use a rat-tail comb. I just don't own one. Sweep hair to the opposite side then style.

Right, center, or left. What's your favorite part?

Reflections on The Bun Effect: 30 in 30 and Upcoming {GIVEAWAY}

Well, technically it the series was 31 in 31, but who's counting? I really loved The Bun Effect! It quite obvious now that I have an obsession with up-styles!

The only thing that I would do better would be to polish up my edges with some product. I've never been one to care if my edges were slicked backed and smooth. But I do see that my styles would have looked far more pulled together. Added to the to do list! All silliness aside, how awesome is it to have 31 styles in your arsenal for those days when you want more than an average top knot but don't feel like thinking?

AND How better to celebrate 30 days of buns than with a {GIVEAWAY}!!!! We totally heart you guys and want to show it by giving away two of our favorite products: Matrix Biolage Hydratherapie Conditioning Balm and Matrix Biolage Hydratherapie Hydrating Shampoo. The giveaway will run from June 15-July 15, 2013 and the winner will be announced/contacted the next day!
