[Hairstyle] Perm Rods | #WashDayExperience

My curls last week lasted all of 3 hours. THREE. Like one-two-three. The reason: It was pouring rain and I totally forgot to use a holding product. #fail #fail #fail. I was super disappointed. The highlight was how soft, smooth, and stretched my hair was for the rest of the week...in a high bun. Ha-ha! After much debate, I went for another perm rod set this week. Same exact products BUT i remembered my Good Hair Is Resilient Styling foam this time!

  1. Extreme deep condition- I fully detangled my hair then applied Matrix Biolage Hydrasource Conditioner to my roots and Joico K-Pak Revitaluxe to my ends. Then I massaged my stands with extra virgin coconut oil, covered with a plastic cap and let sit for a few hours.
  2. Tea Rinse- using 2 green tea bags steeped in 2 cups of water + 2 tbsp of glycerin.
  3. Smoothing Treatment- with a large dollop of Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution.
  4. Air Dried- I applied a bit of Chi Silk Infusion to 80-85% wrapped in a cotton t-shirt.
  5. Leave ins-I used Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner to moisturize, extra virgin coconut oil to seal and Good Hair Is Resilient Styling foam for a soft hold, then set my hair on about 35 orange perm rods and left in overnight

The Results:
Omgosh. Omgosh. Omgosh. Hello great hair day! I had a couple of wonky uncurled pieces---but girlllll I was still whipping my hair back and forth this morning! Too bad that I don't have anywhere important to be today. Why do good hair days always happen when I have nothing to do. #conspiracytheory

The last time that I used a styling/setting foam was way back in 2009 when I started following Ateeya (y'all remember her?!?) and using KeraCare Wrap Foam. I really didn't understand how to use it. I couldn't wet wrap my hair to save my life. My hair never dried with any bounce or shine. It was a total fail! But this setting foam from GoodHairIs? Oh yeah---this one I know that I'll empty!

I've gotten several requests to see my wet hair. I gotta warn y'all now. It ain't pretty. Although I'm MBL, my wet hair shrinks up to chin/shoulder length. It's super dense and curly at the roots and straighter at the ends. I took a couple of pics of some shed hair that I think explains my dilemma. More on that soon.

I think that I wanna straighten my hair soon to get a trim...or maybe a cut...or something like that. I really obsess worry about my ends. Is it really possible to make 65 weeks without major breakage? Meh...the jury is still out.

How was your #washdayexperience?

Besitos!
KLP

  3. I love your curls!! So pretty, KLP!! I've never tried a perm-rod set, but they are moving higher and higher up on my I-don't-need-this-but-I-really-want-it hair products list. Ha! My hair shrinks up so much, I'm usually not convinced of its true length. I hate that. I'm scared of what my shrinkage will look like whenever I go natural.

    1. My list of "I-don't-need-this-but-I-really-want-it hair products" is about a mile long honey! Luckily perm rods are super cheap. I picked up 2 packs from Sally's for about $7-8.

I'll bet all my marbles that your natural hair shrinkage would make the rest of us drool girl!

    1. Once I get more comfortable with my perm rods, I'll definitely share a better list of tips. But so far:

!. Start rolling from the roots down. I get the best tension and smoother roots.
      2. Use end papers if you don't feel like your ends are secure
      3. Set on damp hair---this is a personal preference for me. I hate detangling or setting soaking wet hair. It wrecks all kinds of havoc and breakage.

I hope this is enough to help for now!

      Thanks for stopping by chica!

    3. The only down side is that my ends don't get as curly if I don't wrap carefully. the #scienceofpermrods LOL.

  8. Awww, so sorry for only 3 hours! Your curls looked great though! I live by setting foams...I have different ones for different purposes. I'm about 10 weeks behind you and I have a lot of breakage, but my hair was already breaking in certain areas before I started my stretch turned transition. I'm going to try flexirods this weekend and follow in you and Jeni's footsteps.

  10. Your wash day results always look good, How long does it take you from start to finish? It just seems so effortless for you lol.
I was eyeing that joico k pak last week, would you consider that a hard protein treatment?

    1. From start to finish is about 2 hours short of forever. LOL. I typically either deep condition or set my hair overnight so that I don't have to sit under a dryer at all. (I hate sitting under the dryer with a passion) As far as perm rods---it still takes me about an hour to 1.5hrs to set my hair and they always dry overnight---which is 4-5 hours.

I love me some Joico K-Pak! For my hair, I'd consider it a medium protein treatment. I could see myself using it weekly to keep my ends strong (and on my head LOL) But don't let me steer you wrong. My hair loves and greatly benefits from protein. If your hair is a bit sensitive to protein then this might act as a hard protein treatment.

  11. Your perm rod curls are so beautiful, KLP! I can't believe you are 65 weeks post! Your curls are so smooth :) Girl don't you want to come over sometimes and do mine? Lol. My curl results never work out the way I want them to.

Congrats on the great wash day, boo! Keep whipping that hair, honey! :)

    1. I think that the smoothness is a combination of a great deep condition + Moisturizing leave in + wrapping my roots first around the rods then working my way to the ends. I'm telling you---tension makes all the difference!

Welcome back to the #washdayexperience club!

  15. Your hair looks so pretty all the time! I have so much breakage, well at least I think it's a lot. It's so frustrating, and I just don't know what to do. I'm so tempted to cut off my relaxed ends just to see if that helps!!!

    1. Hey Yalanda! I totally understand your pain chica. But before you go all loca on us. Try a trim (1/4-1/2") and see if it helps. I'll be doing the same soon.

Do you see a lot of breakage when you're detangling or in everyday styling?

  16. Nice perm rods. Can u please clarify for me when you cleanse in your wash day? Before or after step 1? Also do u rinse step 2 before applying step 3 or apply it on top? Finally, do you t-shirt dry before applying chi silk infusion or apply it, then t- shirt dry? I learnt a lot from you and just want to understand your wash day regimen better. Thanks for understanding.

    1. Hey Ihuchi! I didn't shampoo this particular wash day. I only shampoo once or twice a month. I realized that 1. My hair doesn't like shampoo very much and 2. between co-washing and deep conditioning every week, my scalp doesn't accumulate a ton of dirt or grime. I can't say that only shampooing once or twice a month will work for everyone, but so far it's not hurting. :)

My hair is in 4 sections pinned up in gigantic bantu knots throughout my wash day. I rinse my dc from section 1, apply the tea rinse. Let it sit, while I repeat on the remaining sections. Then I do the same with my smoothing/detangling treatment. I rinse the smoothing/detanling treatment one section at a time too and put my hair back into the bantu knots. Then I use a cotton tshirt (with my hair still in the bantu knots to dry my hair a bit. Once its about 80-85% dry, I apply Chi Silk Infusion and move on to detanling and setting my hair for the week. My roots are just too curly to attempt anything without it in manageable sections.

      I hope that helps!
