What To Wear For A 5k Race | Fitness Friday

Tomorrow Keyda and I are pounding the pavement in our first 5k of 2014. Regardless of the temperature, humidity or how much I sweat sparkle, I intend on looking good while doing it! It's #FitnessFriday *throws confetti* and of course I'm linking up with the awesome Ebony of Longing4Length, and fiercely fabulous Britt of One&20, to share what I'm wearing to my 5k race.

Honestly, you can wear whatever you want to your 5k race. Comfort is the key. You don't need anything fancy. And forget wearing new clothes or shoes---If you haven't worn it for a least a week prior to your race, don't bother now. Focus on keeping your stride and pushing your hardest.

1. Jacket: It's supposed to be 60+ degrees tomorrow. It's also supposed to rain and 3 days ago it snowed. Yeah. This chica is definitely bringing a warm not too tight but not too loose lightweight jacket---with pockets. (Suggested: Reebok Women's Workout Ready Double Knit Hoodie)

2. Sneaks: I love running. So I keep 3-4 pairs of running sneaks in rotation. My shoes are definitely "broken into" and are super comfortable. Please don't forget to tie your laces pre-race! (Suggested: Reebok Premier ZigWild TR)

3. Pants: Moisture wicking, moisture wicking, moisture wicking. Please only wear pants that are moisture wicking. Why? You will sweat sparkle from parts of your body that you didn't know that you had. Choose pants that wear close to the body, provide freedom of motion, and claro que si make your butt look fabulous! (Suggested: Reebok Workout Ready Capri)

4. Head band: Do not be that girl. You know that girl fighting with her hair every step for 3.1 miles. High bun this one and secure with a fitted headband to prevent flyways from annoying you. (Suggested: Scunci No Slip Grip Head Bands)

5. Shirt: Most races include a nifty "brag" t-shirt in your registration perks. Wear it if you get one! For tomorrow's race, I'm sporting my Black Girls Run Preserve the Sexy tee. My fave brag tee is super comfy, has a great fit, and makes me feel like a million bucks. Plus I'm running with a few members of my Black Girls RUN! DC crew. If you hate running alone and looking for a motivated, encouraging group of brown girls to kick it with, check BlackGrilsRun.com  to find a local running group. (Suggested: BGR Performance Tee)

6. Lucky Socks: I have lucky socks. I wear them every race. They are purple and very awesome. Without my lucky socks, I'm convinced that I will trip over my own feet and take out at least 10 other runners in the process. I don't wanna be that girl! Ha-ha! Whatever makes you feel lucky or gets you in the running zone, don't hestiate to wear it! (Suggested: Those holey socks in the back of your drawer that you refuse to throw away. Yep. Those are the luckiest pair)

Got any races planned this Spring?

[Tutorial] Side French Twist with a Twist

I get so bored with basic buns. Yes they are easy. Yes they are simple. Yes they are effective. But who doesn't need a little spunky variety in their hair obsessed life? And thanks to my protective style rolodex I'm never stuck in a bored basic bun rut for long. Meet the Side French Twist with a Twist. It totally reminds me of a french roll gone rogue!

Side French Twist with a Twist
  1. Moisturize and detangle hair. (This style was created on stretched and air dried hair)
  2. Create a side part then separate hair ear to ear.
  3. Pull the left side across the back of your head. Secure with a pin. Repeat with the left side.
  4. Divide the back into four sections. Grab the first section closer to your ear and wrap it towards your head in a large finger curl, then use a pin to secure. Repeat on the next two sections, staggering each tuck to create the side twist.
  5. Double strand twist the remaining section then pull it across the top of your side french twist. Use a pin to tuck it into the opening of the curl on the opposite side.
 Tips and Tricks:
  1. My hair isn't thick enough. No worries. This style makes your hair appear more voluminous than it actually is. Fine haired chicas can still rock this one.
  2. My hair has too much texture. Start the style with stretched hair. I usually go for bantu knots but a old braid/twist out would work just as well.
  3. My hair isn't long enough. If your hair is fully neck length, you can pull this off. Because your hair is tucked in, length isn't that big of a factor. Make your french twist tight. Then pick it apart a little at a time to create the illusion of a fuller updo. Neat hair need not apply!
What's your go to non-bun updo?

Wash Day

Last week, I was so loving my hair. To the point that I didn't really feel like washing this week! Pero, claro que si, I know better than that. Ha-ha! This week I felt adventurous and tried a shampoo bar. Here's how my wash day went:

  1. Pre-Poo- using Bobeam Rootz Herbal Hair Oil and detangled with my fingers.
  2. Shampoo- with Bobeam Rootz Herbal Hair Grower Shampoo bar.
  3. Extreme deep condition- I deep conditioned with OGX Nourishing Coconut Milk Conditioner on the length of my hair. Then I massaged my stands with extra virgin coconut oil, covered with a plastic cap and sat under my hooded dryer for an hour and left it in overnight.
  4. Green Aloe Hair Rinse- After rinsing the conditioner, I applied 1 part steeped green tea + 1 part aloe vera gel + 1 tbsp Glycerin, using a narrow tip applicator to my strands--focusing on the roots. I let it sit for a few minutes then rinsed.
  5. Smoothing Treatment- with a large dollop of Matrix Biolage Detangling Solution.
  6. Air Dried- to 80-85% wrapped in a cotton t-shirt.
  7. Leave ins- I used the LOC method, starting with a little extra virgin coconut oil, Jessicurl Too Shea Extra Moisturizing Conditioner, and my kitchenista Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter. Then I twisted my hair and wrapped the ends in satin rollers.

Results:
Meh. I still suck at twist outs. My hair just looked...stupid. Ha-ha! So, I pulled it all back and secured with a banana clip and tucked the ends with bobby pins. Viola. The perfect twist out french tuck. I really don't know why I torture myself with braid and twist outs. They hate me!

5 Ways To Use Olive Oil In Your Hair

Some of the best treatments for your hair are found at the grocery store. I've recently fallen in love with olive oil. Unlike synthetic oil blends, olive oil penetrates your hair providing the nourishment and conditioning that our hair craves.  It also can improve the elasticity and strength of your hair---especially important to chemically treated chicas like me! Here's 5 ways to include olive oil in your hair care regimen:

Scalp Massage
How: Use your fingers to massage olive oil into your scalp in circluar motions for a few minutes.
Why: Extra virgin olive oil contains antioxidant vitamin E, vitamin A and helps alleviate dry scalp. Scalp massages are also believed to increase blood flow to your hair follicles and stimulate hair growth.

Detangler
How: Apply olive oil to your dry hair before your wash as a pre-shampoo treatment.
Why: Pre-shampoo detangling is a must for me. I'm certainly sure that I wouldn't have made it to 8+ months post without it. My tangles can be monstrous but the slip from warmed olive oil melts them like butter.

Oil Rinse
How: Apply an excessive amount of warmed olive oil to your hair. Rinse immediately.
Why: There are times when I apply olive hair to my hair to aid in detangling, rinse in the shower, and my hair feels amazing. Like, I don't feel like deep conditioning amazing. Like, this is easier than co-washing amazing. If your hair just needs a mid week moisture pick me up, try rinsing with plain old olive oil.

Extreme Deep Conditioner
How: Apply your deep conditioner then a light layer of olive oil to seal it in.
Why: I first picked up on this brilliant deep conditioning technique via Carol's Daughter's Olive Oil Infusion. My Extreme Deep Condition layers an oil over your conditioner sealing in all that moisturizing goodness. To help the conditioner penetrate, I add heat via a heat cap for at least an hour. My hair usually feels like silk afterwards.

Sealant
How: Moisturize your hair then seal it in with an olive oil based product.
Why: Whilst, I don't mind using olive up straight from the bottle to seal my hair---it's just heavier and a little greasier than coconut oil or grapeseed oil. However, I absolutely love it in my DIY hair butter---the best sealant in the world. Well, for now. Ha-ha!

Are you an olive oil kinda girl?

How To Style Your Hair Like A Dancer

Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending a dance performance featuring Keyda! Walk a mile by Contradiction dance was an abstract blend of dance, theater, and pop culture storytelling about shoes plus the people that wear them. Keyda was amazing in it---but being hair obsessed---I was totally in love with her simple, fashionable, and functional protective style: French Braid Into a Bun.

How To:
  1. Start with moisturized and detangled hair.
  2. Create a center part.
  3. French braid each side.
  4. Pin the ends over to the opposite sides
  5. (Optional) Accessorize with your favorite pins or clips.
Every single strand stayed in place. Even when as she was flipping into handstands!

You rocked it Keyda!

Protein Powered Spring Dinner | Fitness Friday

I'm a cardio queen. Spin, kickboxing, Zumba, running. You name it, I'm about it. Cardio burns tons of calories, but I really want to tone up my body. I've changed up my workouts to include weights. Now it's time to work more protein into my diet. After all, protein builds your muscles... and your hair.  It's #FitnessFriday *throws confetti* and of course I'm linking up with the awesome Ebony of Longing4Length, and fiercely fabulous Britt of One&20, to share a protein powered grilled Spring meal.

Mesquite Grilled Steak with Sauteed Kale and Lentils

Flank Steak- lean protein
Our hair is made almost entirely of protein. Eating protein feeds your muscles and your hair zinc, iron, and B vitamins to keep your strands strong.

Kale- Dark Leafy Vegetables Super size your green leafy veggies, not your fries. Research has shown that low iron levels play a role in hair loss. Eating dark leafy veggies is one way to increase your iron levels, keep your body feeling energized and your hair follicles healthy.

Spicy seasoning- Flavor without the calories
Mesquite seasoning is delicious, flavorful, and NO calories. You can pick up a pre made blend or make your own. Here's my recipe:
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
3 tbsp paprika
1 tbsp cumin
1 tsp chili powder
1 tbsp red pepper flakes
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp brown sugar
Combine everything in  coffee grinder and store in a mason jar.

Lentils- Fiber filler
Protein packed, heart healthy, and chocked full o fiber. Lentils are so super easy to cook and are perfect with nearly any dish. To cook, boil in salted water for 15-20 minutes and drain. Add them to a salad, soup, or saute and your body will thank you!

How To Do Bantu Knots

Bantu knots are my favorite heat free way to style my hair. I first discovered them last spring and it's been love since. Bantu knots are usually the base of all of my updos and perfectly smooths my roots whilst giving my ends some life. Here's an update on how I get my big fluffy curls.
  1. Detangled and Air Dried: I start with detangled air dried hair. I get the best results when my hair has been washed 24-48 hours before I try to install the knots.
  2. Large Sections: I prefer my curls in big sections because I love volume. Big hair; KLP don't care. Ha-ha! The smaller your sections, the smaller the curls. You can experiment to see which curl you like the best. I usually end up with 10-12 knots. My knots take about 15 minutes to install.
  3. Cocktail: Moisturizer + Oil + Holding product. Use whatever floats your boat. My go to cocktail has been Jessicurl Too Shea! Extra Moisturizing Conditioner + my kitchenista Tangerine Vanilla Whipped Hair Butter + Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I do believe that order of operations matter on this one. I've found that many products that "hold" aren't particularly moisturizing and can make my hair feel or look very dry over time. Layering on a moisturizer and oil prior to the holding product traps that moisture in and keeps the frizz at bay.
  4. How to knot: Bantu knots can be best explained as mini coiled buns that are twisted around itself and secured in place. It's easier seen than explained. Anybody else in love with Whoissugar on YouTube? She is hilarious honey! *in my best whoissugar singing voice* She has some of the best natural hair tutorials on the block and her bantu knot tutorial can not be beat. Watch it a few times, until you get the hang of the technique.

Troubleshooting
Chicas, I can not count how many bantu knot fails I've had since I started my HHJ. One time, my knots were so bad that I had to go and re-washing my hair just to leave the house with my hair in a high bun. Simply. Terrible. Here are the 3 biggest reasons that my knot-outs were so awful:
  • Poor product selection- My cocktail selection can make or break my curls. The wrong products make my hair dry, frizzy or won't provide enough hold. End result: chia pet.
  • Not drying completely- I've attempted wet bantu knot sets and well----y'all will never see pics of that. I waited 8 hours and my hair never dried. When I took them down, I looked like I got stuck by lighting. *shudders* I achieve my best results when my hair has been air dried. Also, note that if you use too much of anything in your cocktail, the knots either won't set and it will frizz. End result: chia pet.
  • Knots un-raveling: First, be sure that your knots are coiled tightly. Not so tight that your scalp hurts and your eyebrows looked snatched, but tight enough that your ends are tucked securely near the base of the knot. When in doubt, use a pin to secure your ends. If your knots unravel unbeknownst, in that section your curl will be wonky. End result: chia pet.
So your first set was awful. No sweat. You're totally not alone. Throw it all up and rock a curly bun or tuck it under and work a faux bob. Whatever you do, do not give up!

3 Tips for Longer Healthier Natural and Relaxed Hair

I've been an accidental naturalista and I've been a bone straight relaxer. Both textures had benefits, both had drawbacks. However we have more in common than you'd think. Regardless of how you choose to flaunt your tresses, there are 3 things that I've realized that I need to always do:

Care-
Contrary to popular belief, naturally curly hair isn't strong as steel wool. Its fragile and intricate. When you relax---your hair is even more delicate. Be gentle to your hair. Deep condition like your life depends on it and focus on a low manipulation routine. Treat your hair well---trust me it will grow.

Consistency-
My products may change but my hair care regimen has been consistent for 2 years. I started my journey by figuring out what my hair needed on a daily, weekly, and monthly schedule. My hair needs to be moisturized daily, deep conditioned weekly, and clarified monthly. Start with a schedule that you can manage.

Commitment-
There will be times when you dedication to maintaining healthy hair will waiver. My pregnancy with minion #2 was exhausting. So hair took a back seat to life and I sadly admit that wasn't even doing the bare minimum. I'd skip washing and deep conditioning for weeks. *eek* I relied my flat iron entirely too much. *gasp* After 2 months of pure neglect. I had to get 2 inches of split frayed ends chopped off. Submit to balance in your hair care. Find that place where your hair thrives but where you're not overwhelmed, then commit to it.

Last but not least---have fun! Your hair is an accessory not a burden. Enjoy it!

What are your tips for longer healthier hair?

My Thoughts:
I haven't met an OGX, formerly Organix, product that I haven't liked. The Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco Conditioner is no exception. It gives my hair the perfect hint of moisture during a pre-shampoo. I love it for co-washing when I'm sweating like a sinner in church at the gym. I'm guilty of diluting it with a little water and aloe vera juice to use as a leave in conditioner. Plus it's a very gold star worthy deep conditioner when you hair is feeling uber dry. It contains a few of my fave ingredients: coconut oil, glycerin, behentrimonium chloride, and argan oil. Plus the scent is fabulous and the consistency is rich. My hair easily absorbs the conditioner, so a little goes a long way. Not to mention that the price is very right, honey. Under $10---you can't beat that!
